We Slept on An Active Volcano in Guatemala - Hiking Acatenango Volcano

Показать описание
Volcan de Acatenango in Guatemala is an active volcano near Antigua, Guatemala. Climbing it is a popular but very challenging activity for many visitors to Guatemala, and of course we had to give it a try for ourselves. Acatenango hasn't erupted for years, but the neighbouring Fuego Volcano erupts every 15 minutes!!! From Acatenango Volcano, you can get incredible views of Fuego erupting, which is what we came to experience! We have never seen a volcano erupt before, so this is a first for us and we chose to do this experience on a day that is VERY special to us!
We chose to do this tour with V-Hiking Tours for three reasons - they have awesome reviews, their camp has epic views of Fuego Volcano, and they allowed us to bring Evie! The hike is seriously hard and without the guides keeping us moving at all times, we're really not sure we would have finished this hike! It was so steep, and so difficult, but in the end it was SO worth all the effort to get to base camp.
After a gruelling 5-ish hour hike up Acatenango Volcano, we arrived at base camp and were immediately rewarded with plumes of smoke erupting from Fuego Volcano. Evie fell asleep immediately after we arrived at camp and missed most of the eruptions of course. Fog rolled in before long worrying us that we wouldn't get any decent views of lava erupting from Fuego overnight. Luck was on our side though, and we spent the night being awoken with loud eruptions that we could watch right from our bed!!! It was one of the most incredible sights we have ever seen.
When it was still dark outside, we began our hike to the top of Acatenango Volcano to get views of the valley of volcanoes that surround this part of Guatemala. One again, we got super lucky with the weather and got stunning views of the landscape peppered with volcanoes. It was a view we won't soon forget.
This is one of the best things to do in Guatemala, and also one of the hardest! We were glad to have some hiking experience under our belts because, even though this hike was one 2 days, it was a pretty intense two days and we finished the hike in need of a massive sleep! Hiking an active volcano was an incredible introduction to Guatemala, though!

======================
Hey there! We are Nicole and Mico and in March 2021, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and began traveling the world! We never thought we'd be making travel vlogs on YouTube, but after realizing that we had a unique opportunity to share our adventure and make the world feel more familiar and inviting to anyone watching, we took the leap and picked up the camera! We hope our videos show how wonderful, delicious, and friendly the world can be.
