I regularly practice with my chickens so they let me lift them when they are broody. The amount of mental and physical scars were worth it

4 of my hens went broody. One went broody on an empty nest, one on an unviable nest, and the other 2 had babies. One of em has 6, and the other has 4. So our flock went from 7 adults(2 roosters and 5 hens) to 17(2 roosters, 5 hens, and 10 chicks).

This is SUCH a better way to do it than having a single hen sitting all lonely and then being the only bird protecting the babies when they hatch. THIS is THEIR way, since unlike other birds they don't make separate nests, and different hens do often lay all their eggs in the same area. Everything chicken is teamwork-based.

Years ago we had a hen go broody. She he was sitting on 6 eggs. About half way to the eggs were going to hatcing a different hen took over sitting on the eggs after running off the first hen and the eggs were successfully hatched. When the hen brought the baby chicks out of the nest, a third hen took the chicks over and she raised the chicks on her own. Thats how the chicks had 3 moms .😂😢

My 2 hens became broody in the same nest. After hatching on day 2, all 11 chicks came out and started playing with each other and both mamas got confused and started fighting with each other to take over chicks 😂 . Now only nicest and 1st time Mama is taking care of all 11 chicks and other hen is separate.

That stick is so necessary!😂 Those girls will get your hand good when they are broody. You wanna peek? Just pick a little stick and move feathers around. If you don't have a stick, your hand will be out of commision for a week.😂

So cool! ☺️congratulations 🎉
FYI, if you still wanted to hatch out more chicks they can be persuaded to continue to stay on the eggs longer but I don’t remember exactly how. You can have a difference of over a week between the chicks. I found this out with brooding some in the incubator. I then found a video online and they actually take the other eggs and put them in the incubator to finish hatching if the mother leaves them. It was very informational. I hope that helps.

I had three broody hens. I should havme put them all together because after hatching, the moms fought with each other. I ended up leaving only the nicest momma to tend to 18 babies. Success!

We're at the tail end of 4 broody hens. We're on week 3 since the babies started hatching. 3 Orfington and a bardroc hen went broody one after another. 1st one hatched 5, 2nd one only a single baby and the bardroc overachived with 6. So our hens don't know how to raise babies and to be honest our coop isn't set up for babies to be raised in it so right now we have a dozen chicks of verious ages in a cage inside and our schedule is going by the youngests with a little variation with the oldest 5 who are about to be old enough to spend some time outside in a bigger cage in the day. And we will potentially have more chicks sometime between this week and the next week. We raise the babies for 2 to 3 months and then with the big cage we start getting the older flock and them used to each other for another month or 2 before we let them roam around in the coop with the adults. So the mamas will see their babies in a few months. Oh and the 4 that we bought a few months ago are in with the adults so our flock is essentially doubling this year due to baby fever with the hens that have a few roosters. I tossed the rooster thats related to one of the hens out to roam free.
His destiny is to hopefully end up in the freezer along with the other 2 free roaming roosters and the 2nd rooster in the coop. We only need one not 5.

I have noticed that some eggs, in fact most eggs, will hatch between 23-26 days.

My dad had a chicken that stopped laying eggs. Every six months my dad would go to a farm animal store and buy babies chick and turkeys and goose and Swans and ducks and she would take them under her wings and raise like she babies chick. I am a Mennonite and grew up in a farm my dad never killed our old chickens he would go buy little chickens and turkeys and goose and Swans and ducks for the one that stopped laying eggs or he would go buy eggs that had babies inside the eggs and put the eggs under the chickens.
