About capitals being built from scratch: There is Islamabad in Pakistan (founded in 1960), Astana in Kazachstan (founded in 1997), Naypidaw in Myanmar (construction started in 2002) and soon there will be a new Egyptian capital as well.

Canberra, the capital of Australia was purpose built too. It was designed by an American Walter Burley-Griffin and they named the man made lake in the city after him. It is nowhere near the largest city either but is the largest inland city

They built it as a compromise because Melbourne and Sydney were fighting over being declared the capital

8:00 Yeah, and you’re right that the difference is that Mary I of England had plenty of support (from the Catholic population, at least initially) and was actually pretty powerful, while Catherine’s husband was just plain weak. But yeah, this could’ve been a mistake.

Canada and Australia also kind of built new capitals, they were small towns before but in both cases the infrastructure was basically completely changed for a new “neutral capital” to be built. Here in Canada it was to balance the power between English and French Canada, in Australia it was to balance the biggest former colonies.

Strangely enough, people opposing Catherine (mainly serfs and cossacks) would indeed rally to the banner of Peter III., even though he was long dead. Pugatchev claimed to be Peter who had escaped the assassination attempt... Another parallel to Tudor England.

5:20 I guess Canada counts with Ottawa. Montreal was United Canada's capital (Upper and Lower Canada wich = Ontario and Quebec today) but after parliament got burned down by a mob in 1840s, I think Queen Victoria chose a new capital city for United Canada. They decided on a small city in the middle of nowhere exactly in between Upper & Lower Canada = Ottawa, so it could be in a "neutral area".
