Aside from it being a general life lesson, it also applies to how Shadow was following path laid out for him by Gerald Robotnik instead of forging his own path, which he only figures out in the ending of SA2 and sacrifices his life to save the world.

Can we be honest? When the lyrics are put in front you, they make complete ssense. We talking about living in the now, and living for yourself. Purely following others will leave you the same person you once were, at the end of it all. Life favors those who are cavalier.
