Once, when I had the privilege to talk to medics of German special operations forces, they showed me all of their equipment. In addition to tourniquets, bandages and infusions, I suddenly discovered something unusual: a neatly folded, small German flag.

Of course I wanted to know what it was all about, to which the medics replied the following: Whenever possible, they try to place the flag above the patient, whether in a tent, field camp, or vehicle. The injured soldier may not be able to hear or his consciousness may be otherwise impaired. But as soon as he sees the three familiar colors, he knows he is in the hands of his comrades, who will care for him under any circumstances. In addition, the flag means a piece of home in an otherwise hostile environment.

My respect for medics went up another 200% that day.

And it shows something else: The flag of a nation is much more than just a piece of cloth.

Damn, that's a good way of helping take care of their mental/emotional state when they're already in a bad physical state.

As an ex US Army medic, this is awesome. They truly envelope the role of a medic.

My grandpa told me that medics in Vietnam were treated like royalty by their fellow soldiers. One North Vietnam officer ordered his soldiers not to fire on medics treating wounded soldiers. In return his platoon leader ordered them to allow the Vietnam soldiers to evacuate their wounded as well. That was very rare in the thick of battle but that little piece of humanity remained.

Wow, this actually made me emotional. It's such a thoughtful little thing that can have such a great impact on a wounded and traumatised soldier! Gotta respect my military 🇩🇪

Back in my medic times with the Bundeswehr we were also told to do so in helicopters and vehicles. Especially if the patient is instable or barely conscient, it helps him to recover orientation. "OK, I'm back in safe hands." That way we can calm down the patient immediately and avoid chaotic responses and disorientation.

"You are attended by your allies" is a shockingly important piece of information for war casualties.

MAN! As an American combat Veteran (U.S. Army 505th PIR 82nd Airborne Division), I salute the German Spec Ops Medics for their impressive and inovative technique in using their Honored Flag to bring Comfort, Hope, and the Will to live to badly wounded Troops. It seems like a "small Thing", but, as a combat Vet, I assure you it is more impactful and important than many may think it is. Bravo, German Bundeswehr, Bravo!

The US Military should start doing this with our wounded.

Having served alongside the German Military (Non SF) for several years, I can attest to their professionalism, courage and work ethic.

That’s gotta be some of the most wholesome military shit I’ve ever seen. Morale is a huge thing and Germans do it right.

I remember 10 years ago when I was in India and I had lost my passport. My flight back to Germany was book already and I didn't have much time. I went to my embassy and as soon as I saw the German flag I felt home and secure. That was for sure the most emotional moment in India.

That's awesome. When my mom died and the funeral home came to coolect the body, they asked if she had been a veteran. I told them that my dad had been a US Marine. Because of that they shrouded her body in an American Flag. That was the only time I cried.

I lived in germany a couple of years while my dad was stationed there. I was younger so I don’t remember much, but from what I remember, they were all real professionals. Great people
