The Blob is a metaphor for communism (hence being red) which consumes the individual to feed itself. Mcarthyism and its paranoia about communism creeping into the United States, and cold war hysterics inspired numerous science fiction stories.

When I was a kid the Blob scared the living daylights out of me. That to me was the scariest monster in the world. I couldn't sleep without a towel under my door for a month. I'm talking the old 50s Blob. Later find out the actual blob was like cornstarch and red dye.

This remake is one of few movies that has been able to scare me as a full grown adult. It's pretty darn graphic with all its depictions of the melting bodies of the blob's victims.

My older aunt once told me that when she saw this movie as a kid, she was afraid of jello for weeks. After seeing the 1980s version its probably the most terrifying monster along with the Thing to me.

I wrote my own fan fiction sequel to the 1958 version called "Crimson Earth." In my story a bunch of government documents from the 50s were declassified, including information about the Blob. Scientists working for a corporation are the only ones who realize the importance of the Blob document, because most people gloss over it as outdated arctic research. The corporation retrieve the Blob which quickly escapes. In the following months, the blob grows to the point where in has consumed almost all life on Earth, except life living on frozen regions. Now the main part of the story follows an Antarctic research team that were saved by virtue of their location. While studying the Blob to find a way to kill it, the Antarctic researchers discover that the Blob has entered a second stage of development that is plant like and shockingly harmless. The scientists come to believe that the Blob is actually a weapon used to pacify habitable worlds for the intent of colonization. The researchers are able to contact other survivors who have access to an observatory, and are informed that a vast cloud of artificial objects has entered the solar system. My story ends here with the realization that with less than ten percent of the human race left there is no hope of stopping whatever may come next.

Nice video, however being a biologist i have to point out that your statement at 1:16 is wrong: it would not be some kind of bacteria, but some kind of eukayote (amoeba have a nucleus, in contrast to bacteria and archaea)

I saw the remake when I was 7 and it terrified me. I remember being in the shower and trying to really really hurry while staring at the drain; just waiting for the monster to make his inevitable appearance.

My Grandfathers car was one of the cars in front of the dinner in this movie. He didn't even know they were filming just outside the dinner and when he later saw the movie he realized that they filmed his car for the scene.
