From about age 6-14 we cooked rice and mixed it with ground beef. About 2 pounds dried rice and 1pound beef. Cooked big pot and when it cooled freeze it in a ziplock. about 14-15 meals. He was a small dog. When He got older we switched to specail old dog food. He passed away november two years ago at the age 18.4. Best of luck to you.

I've been feeding my 8 1/2 yr old American Staffordshire Terrier dog food and treats that mostly contain chicken, salmon, rice, fruits and veggies and share with her almost any meal I cook for myself (except food products that may be toxic of course) since I rescued her at 5 mos old. I am not a vegetarian but do not eat red meat. Her last vet visit they said she is in perfect health and her organs are in great shape. She is happy and energetic. You may have to just watch the change does not upset your dog's stomach.

I have a miniature poodle and she loves scrambled eggs with cheese, and when I cook healthy food I share it with her too. I hate when people say she is spoiled because of that, so my reaction was how can you spoil a dog by given them healthy food it’s not like they can cook for themselves, and the love you show them you get it back twice over.

I'm happy to see you guys are feeding Lola homemade food. Some things you need to remember though, grapes, raisins, mushrooms, onions, avocado, garlic, macadamia nuts, milk, nutmeg, excessive amounts of salt, chives, large amounts of broccoli, and any pits or seeds from fruits. I have a dog who is prone to seizures and most of the things i listed can cause seizures ( even in dogs who have never had seizures) among other heath issues. Also, remember Lola will still need some sort of crunchy treats each day keep her teeth in good shape. There are recipes for doggie cookies you may want to try or just buy some already made. Good luck and God bless!!😊

I have been making my own dog food for over 2 years. I found my recipe on Pinterest. My dog food consist of 3lbs ground turkey, baby spinach that i cut up with kitchen shears, 3 cups brown rice, shredded carrots and 1/2 a can of peas. I divide the cooked amount into 4 glass bowls. Each bowl lasts 1 week and I freeze the other 3 remaining bowls. Best choice I could have ever made. My dog knows when I'm cooking it and goes crazy until I give her some. I know your dog will love it.

It is great that you are cooking for Lola. Looks like a good nutritious mix. Sooo much better than the commercial crap. We feed our dog oats, quinoa, nutritional yeast, cage free egg, pumpkin, yogurt, a dash of turmeric and DE and sardines. We give him carrots for treats. He is 3 1/2 and so healthy.

My first dog was very sick. The doctor told me: I would be lucky if she lasted until she was 1 1/2. Well seeing all the call backs for dog food. I staring cooking for her. She last until she was 7 1/2. My second dog is a cockapoo. I got Pumpkin when he was 12 weeks old. He is doing great. You did the right thing!

I use to make food for our dog also. Boiled whole chicken with 1cup cooked brown rice, green, carrots and 1 can of cream of mushroom soup (with no onions in the ingredients) he loved it.

I do a fruit day, veggie day, meat day, then a fast day for my pups! Fruits like cantaloupe, blueberries, apples, peaches, pears, etc. veggies are quinoa, carrots, peas, zucchini, sweet potatoes/yams, etc. Meat day I would always look for the least amount of fat as the dogs can have health issues due to too much fat intake, and always try and see if you can get some sort of organ on meat days too! Heart and liver are very beneficial. So excited you’re feeding Lola homemade food! You will notice such a difference in her mood, coat, energy level, everything!

I really admire what you good souls have created. I'm 69 now, but I always had a strong draw to adventure. I traveled around the perimeter of the U.S. and into Canada and Mexico when I was in the 7th grade. I did several cross country hitch hiking journeys in my late teens and early 20's. I was broke, had no clue what I would encounter, it was all on faith in my spirit, and I think in God, also. Thinking back, it was always driven more in spirit than anything else.

But that's what I admire so much when I watch your video journal, you're living in the spirit, the only difference I see is that you are together as one, and I was always just one. I feel a sense of uplifting happiness each time I watch your adventures unfolding, so zen, so completely casual. What you have is full spirit living, the way it's meant to be. So many others dream of living this pattern, this frequency, and you are already there in it, in a pure and smooth flow. Give thanks to the sky, you have been blessed in a wholesome, healthy gift from the universe. Stay well grounded. I'll keep you both in my prayers.

You have a beautiful lady. Cherish her and never let her go. Someday you will have a beautiful family and your traveling memories to last a life time. I spent 5yrs in Ecuador in the 90’s and it still feels like yesterday. I watch your videos because you guys are living the life that I no longer can, especially with 3 kids :)

you can use liver and kidney as options for meat - plus all the vegies. also all the peels from your food, - potatoes, carrots, beets, leaves of coliflorwer, brocoli (that have lots of nutrients ) you have of your own food mixed in with rice. Also maybe you´ll find what is called "arroz partido" which is rice that has broken up so is not used for packaging but is good quality rice and its cheaper.

About Lola's food: you may need to add some supplements to the mixture. I read that 1/2 tabled of an anti-acid is recommended for additional calcium. If there are any veterinarians among this community, they may have specific recommendations. Like others have said, you may want to consider easing Lola into the new diet to prevent intestinal issues. Dogs need a few days to develop the right type of gut bacteria to deal with diet changes.

For your milk allergies make a small pot of fresh ginger tea. Put a few slices to simmer for 15 mins and drink straight or with honey. This will clear up and flush out your sinuses hence help w allergies.

Keep doing this until your symptoms have disappeared.

I cooked for my dog and she lived 17.6 years. I wouldn’t do white rice. No nutrition in it. My formula was 40% rolled oats, 40% corn grits, 20% purées kidney beans. Then a small amount of safflower or olive oil while cooking the oats and corn grits. I put in the puréed beans afterwards into the grain pot. I make 5-6 days worth at a time in a big pot. Then boil water and mix in the stuff into the dog bowl.

Can add in Spirulina powder after it cools down. Also cook in kombu or other seaweed when boiling big pot of water before adding in oats/corn grits. And a few pinches of sea salt too when cooking the grains.

I feed our dogs rice (tumeric added) with sweet corn and peas. The fussy one ( a Scottish terrier) also has cooked chicken breast and the one with skin allergies (a Kelpie cross) has kangaroo roll with added pumpkin. We also ensure that the food has no grain in it. In addition to this we add salmon biscuits and sweet potato. They seem to like it and they're both really healthy for their age (15 and 14 respectively). We also find that the cost of making the food is about the same as buying tinned dog food but much more nutritious...

We also cook our Heidi's food. She gets baked roasted boneless skinless chicken thighs with yams, green beans, brown rice, and carrots. She loves it and very healthy. We also give her a supplement of Natural Tart Cherry and Dark Berry Bio-Actives, Glucosamine and Omega 3's and 6's.

I had the opportunity to learn how to feed my dog that was allergic to whatever was in the commercial food. The simple, 3 ingredient option was canned fish (or jar of organic babyfood, protein of choice) with rice and whatever green veggie, i.e. kale, chard etc. might be available. This was helpful in that it was not always possible to get the multiple ingredients together. It looks like you found a great recipe and with attention toward what is actual nutrition ... that bowl looks soo inviting. Hoping this helps for those days when it just makes sense to keeps things simple.
Big hugs
