"Focus on skills, not degrees"
I agree, there is a bunch of overhead in academia from learning unused theory.
Although what really irks me is that many of the data science and ML engineer jobs that interest me require an MS degree. You only begin to learn machine learning in undergraduate curriculum in most cases.

You're right. I really like this vid as you are the only person I've come across to point this out. The only saving grace for data scientists is if you pick the right ones, they make awesome engineers in very little time due to their training in methodical approach and typically high intellect. I've worked with dozens of 'em in the last 5 years, and have taken many many through placement programs where we are secretly sifting out the 50% who get imposter syndrome when you tell them they are becoming engineers. The other 50% quickly work out the domain model of the business and learn the coding and data skills really needed to function. Works both ways though, as the other route we go down is getting cheap comp sci graduates and ask them to productionise a model. Once they realise the maths theory in the model is not what they need to understand, but instead they have to refactor the crappy data scientist code in the notebook and build a pipeline around it, now you have killed the reverse of the imposter syndrome mentioned above. So you can make an ML engineer from either side. What you have pointed to here is that the role of ML engineer is one that few understand, and those that do are positioned well to capitalise on emerging academic progress. Taking a step back, this all relies on the open way progress is conducted, via papers, where big tech has been reasonably good at supporting this. If this dries up and we see walled garden innovation take hold, with nda's etc, this can be really change the landscape, as the rest of us will struggle to keep up. This can lead to a nasty monopolisation with some scary consequences

I was hired as an " Assosiate Data Scientist " working on complete pipeline, SQL, research & writing proposals for clients, feature engineering, modeling, and AWS.
As I get assigned a new project, or a new client comes, I study and learn the skills needed and work on it as I only have 7 MONTHS OF OVERALL WORK EXPERIENCE and I did not get in through a Data Analyst role. Instead I showcased projects that I did on my own during COVID Pendemic.
So Am I a ML Engineer?

Thanks for the video Mike... I tried getting a microsoft sql certificate but the only one currently available is the ADMINISTERING MICROSOFT AZURE SQL SOLUTIONS exam. The rest certifications on sql seems to have been retired. Do you think that i should go for it? or is there any better certificate that i can get.

So since you said a python developer could also be a great avenue to get your foot in, my questions are:

Can you get hired as an entry level python developer ? ( collg grad)

If yes then how?

Hey, I really enjoy your channel and content; I appreciate the no-nonsense & straight-forward approach. I'm looking to get an SQL certification and wanted to persue the 1Z0-909(mysql 8.0) however, I don't see any study materials for it and considered the 1Z0-071(oracle). Does it matter?

I would like to make a career in machine learning and like to learn some other domain also so that I will be eligible for both jobs. learning software Engineer skills are useful for ml engineer or learning DE skills are useful for ml engineer.

Mike do you explain a lot of theory part of statistics and math in logikbot? If not then why most courses do? What makes you different?

Anyone thats doing sql is more of a data engineer. In my mind an MLE is doing neural network design and model inference.
