When I was a newbie in Kendo another newbie asked about the lack of belts and the answer of one of the sensei was similar to yours: "you never know until you see them in action".

Something i have been so curious about - you seem to know a lot about the Edo period and I've been so curious about how prisons, cops, etc functioned during that time

"What kind of belt you have?"
"Oh. Canvas. You like? JC Penny, $3.98."

Prior to learning Kendo I learned tae kwon do. In the States the whole belt thing is a scam. It’s how they get more money from you. That’s the whole reason why the do stripe testing prior to belt testing. It’s a way to get more testing fees. I was very excited when I started practicing Kendo and there was no belt system. It was so much more affordable.

Hey shogo and all you wonderful people learning culture I need some clarification

So a buddy of mine got a book that is dnd 5e compatible. And it’s based on a mix of historically accurate and pop culture depictions of Japanese culture. There’s a historically accurate samurai class but there’s a subclass for rangers known as the ronin

Here’s where I need help my friend believes a ronin can be any warrior without a master. Which includes warriors who never had a master to begin with (he wants to make a kitsune ronin and kistune serve no one). What I personally believe is that he doesn’t refer to warrior as a social class because he thinks random mercs can also be ronin as guns for hire. And I was wondering if ronin in the context of the warrior class means they have to start as a samurai or if they have to have had a master at some point in their lives
