Do You Know Why?

If you are an Iaido trainee, I’m sure you’ve trained this Kata Shohattō or Mae hundreds of times. However, do you know why you switch your feet here? I’m sure many people, including myself, were doing it because they were told to.

This is actually an abbreviated motion of you moving closer to the defeated opponent to confirm his defeat. After you confirm that he is defeated, then you switch your legs to make it easier to sheath. Which means, the speed you move your legs should be different. First, moving to put your feet together should be faster, and stepping back should be slightly slower. If you correctly understand the reason why you’re doing the movements, then it should naturally be this way.

My sensei explained this to me! He also told me that after the O-chiburi, we point the kissaki at the ground because if the opponent is not yet defeated, just do a tsuki with the sword and finish (it's a theory from my sensei)

I am absolutely not an iaido trainee but I learn bits about it here and there from videos such as yours and the absolute rigid logic and process behind every single aspect and movement of it never ceases to impress.

In any martial art that has forms, like, say, karate for example, knowing WHY the movements are done are just as important as knowing HOW to do them. It's nice that this video basically confirms it :)

Thousands. But never heard this explanation for this but I’ve often wondered. Training the waza so many times and told the explanation would come to me… it never did even with the visualization and zanshin. I look forward to signing soon.

How funny,
I had yesterday a "solitaire" sete-iai training, and many questions like this one occurred....

The problem with ocidentals teachers is that they only care to explain the movement reasons for the more graduated students IF (and thats a big IF) they asks about.

That was my experience with Karate at the 90s.
Hope this poor teachings got better nowadays.
