Interesting fact: Byers' written testimony on his radium case was used in prosecuting the companies responsible for the poisoning of the radium girls.

Eben Byers was also sealed in a zinc/lead coffin to protect the ground and water.

My son is Autistic and he often goes to the grave yards up London to visit famous people who had died, he even takes a packed lunch and sits there for hours. Then he comes home and does his research on them and then sits with me and teaches me his own dad about it all absolutely fantastic I say 👌👏

Byers was interred in the Byers Mausoleum in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Cemetery – Section 13, Lot 67. He was sealed inside a lead-lined coffin designed to absorb the radiation that will continue to emanate from his remains for centuries to come.

He was exhumed for testing in 1965. The study found that the radiation levels were still highly dangerous.

I lost my brother in law to Glioblastoma a couple years ago. Its a rare and hard to cure cancer. He was a great man. He even had his brain donated for research in hopes other families wouldn't have to go through this. RIP Jason 🙏

The same thing happened to those women that worked in a watch factory, they lost their teeth and died of cancer from licking the brush that had radium on it to paint on the numbers.

That is just horrifying! That poor man, having to live even for a short time like that, is unimaginable.

Back in the 90's I took care of several head and neck cancer patients, some had their jaws removed and sometimes even their sinus. A flap of skin would be attached to cover the open wound and packed with saline gauze. The carotid arteries needed to be protected from drying out so the flap would be pulled back and the gauze replaced with clean new saline gauze. Also I would perform a procedure to clean the area, much like a water flosser, a power wash. It was necessary for me to wear a hood, mask, gloves and a water resistant gown as bits of dead flesh could spray out. The patient breathed via a tracheostomy and ate via a gastric tube since there was no mouth tongue or voice box. A horrible way to live.

Cancer can do crazy things to a body. I am an RN and cared for an elderly woman that chose to not have a mastectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis. Her breast cancer began to grow outward instead of growing inside. Her wound care was horrible. I remember the first time I went to just watch the wound care that I would have to do that weekend coming up. The other 2 RN’s with me had seen this breast wound and knew what to expect…..i had no clue. I was a brand new nurse. They actually told me to leave the room because I concentrated too much on the actual wounds and was obviously not handling it well because of my concentration. I had never seen anything like it until recently. If a dr says you need to have a mastectomy….PLEASE DO IT. That poor sweet soul would apologize every time a nurse went to care for her because when you walked into the house, you could smell the cancer and what it was doing to her body. It broke my heart every time she apologized for the smell and what her breasts looked like. It was traumatizing to a 24 year old RN just getting started in her career. It was more traumatic to an elderly sweet soul that had to live with her body doing this and she had no control over it.

Mausoleums are eerie, especially when no one visits them anymore. The final deaths: when people stop visiting your grave and your name is spoken for the last time.

The agony that Eban Byers went through, would’ve been horrific!
He totally trusted his Dr!
It’s a very sad story! Let’s hope that there weren’t more people afflicted like Eben was! 😢

When I was young, I worked in our local hospital and a patient was admitted with cancer. He had a fear of doctors so bad he refused to seek medical care. He was a smoker and one day he had a blister on his lip. This poor man allowed the cancer continue until it ate his entire jaw off. You could see his entire tongue, it was the worst thing to see. I felt so bad for this poor man, he died a few days later. Don't use tobacco products, EVER.❤

One of the Radium Girls lost her face in a similar manner. That is a truly horrific and lingering way to die.

You brought him back to life by telling his story. Thank you That's truely disturbing and appalling. I was so shocked to see his photos what pain he had to have been in and he lived like that for a little while. That quack Dr. Should have been charged for doing that to Eben. Wow! His case actually made it to Congress and he had a chance to testify but was too sick. Good for him! Because of what he endured he deserved it. His story is his legacy it made a difference in the world because it helped people. R.I.P. God Bless his family

There's something really beautiful about visiting a grave just to tell someone's story. I'm so glad I found your channel. Keep up your amazing work!

I'm an antique bottle collector and know of this quack Radium cure very well. I have owned one or two of these, but sold them ages ago. For some reason, I always thought that the photograph you show at the beginning was of a Vietnamese soldier who had pulled the pin of a grenade with his teeth, which had gone off immediately. Who knows where that info came from, but thanks for clearing up the story behind this mysterious picture.
