How to Prepare Lilac Plant Cuttings to Root

This video shows some of the simple steps to start rooting fresh shoots of a lilac bush.

Rooting compound is NOT meant to be used in water!! It makes them slimy. It is made to be used when placing cuttings directly into soil. You can read more from the writers at Urban Organic Yield.

I’ve read that rooting hormone only marginally improves rooting success. You can most likely get away with not using it.

My experience so far has told me that you do not want them sitting in full sun, but rather ambient light such as you get from a north facing window.

Do you need to change the water? if so, how often?

Strictly speaking, you shouldn't dip cuttings into the pot of hormone. I've read that if something has an infection and you fip it into the hormone, you risk spreading it to everything else you dip into the pot.

Hello, just watched your video on propagating lilacs. I intend to do the same and I plan to use my grow tent, indoors while the cuttings take root. If I may ask, what light schedule would be appropriate? Ideally, I want the cuttings to root and go into vegetative state, to grow bigger before an outdoor transplant. Does that make sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't have rooting powder, you can use Powdered Cinnamon. Works every time.
