HOW TO PRUNE A LILLAC BUSH IN SPRING! Ever wondering what time of year to trim your Lillac bush? OR do you think your Lillac bush looks overgrown? Then this is the video for you! Especially off you are gardening in Canada. I garden I’m Saskatchewan and that has its own host of issues!

To help a Lillac bush look better all year around you need to prune the plant regularly. The key is in separating the bottom of the bush from the soil. In this video I have included a diagram you can screenshot to show the spacing you should aim for when pruning. This will prevent yellow leaves, overgrown & a bulky looking Lillac bush for the summer months to come.

I've watched a few lilac trimming videos and this is the first one that made sense to me - clean the inside, make a dome on the outside. Thank you!

I literally just did this to my lilac bush, came in and watched your video. Our lilac bushes look the same!! Mine was wildly overgrown. I went very prune happy on it. Looking forward to the blooms!! Very helpful video. I saw your lilac Bush afterwards and it is beautiful!! Thanks so much! I feel a lot more confident about what I just did!

Make sure you prune your lilac after it blooms in the spring. Pruning like this will eliminate blooms.

Every other tutorials on pruning lilacs stress out the importance of pruning lilac bushes right AFTER they are done blooming, and NOT in early spring when they are still dormant. You seem pruning your lilac before it even buds. Wrong!
