Kamala Harris blames Trump administration for border crisis

Vice President Kamala Harris has partly blamed the Trump administration for the border crisis taking place under Joe Biden’s presidency.

Ms Harris was tasked with leading a diplomatic effort with Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to address the “root causes” of migration.

“We are a neighbour in the Western Hemisphere, and it is also about understanding that we have the capacity to actually get in there if we are consistent,” Ms Harris told CNN said.

“Part of the problem is that under the previous administration, they pulled out essentially a lot of what had been the continuum of work, and it essentially came to a standstill.”

The vice president said she is taking on the migration challenge with the fundamental idea that people don’t want to leave their country – suggesting “hope” will help keep them there.

Ms Harris said the migration issue couldn’t be solved “overnight” and would be asking UN allies for help.

“If this were easy, it would have been handled years ago,” she said.
