Mazda CX-5 splutters engine won't start - cause faulty MAF

I recorded this video of our Mazda CX-5 as I couldn't find much else like this on the internet and as part of diagnosing the issue we experienced of the car spluttering and engine not starting. There were no error codes on scan tool, checked fuel was coming to engine, checked fuses, etc, etc. Disconnected the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and it started straight away (of course error codes then showed because it wasn't connected).

Tried cleaning MAF with MAF cleaner with no success. Bought a new MAF and installed and worked perfectly from the start. Car has re-taught itself for istop and even has a bit more responsiveness for acceleration.

My 2013 CX5 petrol 2.5l just had the same problem. Starts and than dies, no error codes. When I disconnected MAF it worked in what looks like limp mode and logged errors. I replaced MAF with second hand one and it now works like a charm. Thank you so much for this video, helped me a lot!

Thanks for the video. Our CX-5 wouldn’t start yesterday - weak crank. Googled and decided to disconnect the MAF sensor. Car still wouldn’t start which led me to believe it wasn’t the MAF. Got it towed and the shop said it was. Is the disconnecting of the wire troubleshooting method always correct or is the shop scamming me with a $300 repair/fix? I’m a female; they sounded a little surprised when I mentioned I tried checking the MAF.

Someone I know had the same symptoms as in the above description. She was charged $400 to have it replaced.

So IBRaw got a much better deal, by comparison.
