They should've kept a version of the nanoball, it's a nice precursor to his nano tech armor in Infinity War and thereafter... which sorta came out of nowhere since we saw him last. Would've been nice to have any amount of foreshadow that he fucks with nano tech like this, that way we could presume it would eventually be incorporated with his armor somehow.

To be honest, a decent stopgap measure would've been to just mount the reactor externally and fill the hole with a dummy plug until he could sort it out. Keep the wastage out of his body.
