OK, if u have a blank white page when u open a new tab this is wat you need to do
1:Click on the button in the top right hand corner with the 3 horizontal lines.
2:Click the settings options.
3: On the left hand side click extensions.
4: Then go through your lists of extensions -kinda like apps u've downloaded- until u find some about a default new tab. It seems to be different for some peopel but mine had a note under it saying it was downloaded by a 3rd party.
5:Click remove from chrome.

If you want you can just drag your most visited links to the app page and it will make them an app without an icon.

@MrCssmovie Use Opera and you can compile your own list, put as many as you like and drag and drop them the order you want.
Added bonus is not selling all your web history to Google.

@VictorAndScience I use Chrome as my primary browser on both my Ubuntu 11.10 machines, and I never experienced any sort of noticeable lag with it. Perhaps it's hardware-related?

I personally liked the 1st version of Google Chrome I tried where it had the most visited boxes, sort of like this, but where you could click and "x" on the boxes to remove them. But underneath them they had a bar of the recently closed pages. I personally think that Google Chrome should let you choose which version format you liked to use, or just let you customize it how ever you like. I mean isn't Google Chrome about making it look however you want?

@reverendfloyd If you don't like "most visited" then you could either click on the apps page - and then chrome will keep opening the NTP at apps, or install an extension to replace the NTP with a blank page or a specific website.

@smailsnail I know, but it's way more comfortable to click on one of those giant thumbnails than opening a small popup menu and than click a link.

@franhound
That's the default theme, you need to re-download chrome to update it.

The original design was the best.

It had my "most searched" on the right, so I didn't even have to type a URL
It had 9 of my most visited sites instead of 8
It wasn't bloated
The "recently closed" actually WORKED

The things I like about the new one:
The ability to pin my most visited in the new tab so they don't change OH WAIT NO THEY REMOVED THAT
The ability to move my most visited OH WAIT THEY REMOVED THAT
They allow me to switch back to the old one if I want OH WAIT THEY REMOVED THAT, too

You can drag tabs from most visited to the right of apps to create your own section. If you wish to add other websites to this list (I called mine 'favourites), drag a link to the website (not the tab) into that space. Example, I still use Hotmail: At the top where it says 'Windows Live' (if you click it, it will take you to the home email page) dragged it to where I wanted it in my favourites section on chrome. Now I'm making a 'Uni links' section. I think this is great!

@Pancoar the "recently closed" section is hidden away under the menu bottom right
If you don't want the "most visited" section to display by default then you could
1) set the NTP to start on the apps page
2) create a section called "i'm at work" and put a couple of work related shortcuts on it and then have Chrome start on that
3) install an extension to remove the NTP and replace it with a blank page / specific web page

@JCshizle I totally agree. I thought good design meant reducing the number of times I have to click to do something.

Dear @GoogleChrome, Like he said, please show my recently closed websites without me having to click it. Thank you.

I want an option to see my recently closed tabs without having to click an extra button to get to them. I feel like that was a change designed to make Chrome less convenient, so you could promote your apps. I have no problem with you promoting your apps, and could we find a way to do it without creating a less pleasurable user experience? If there was an option to put my recently closed tabs on the front of the page like before that would be much appreciated.
