What makes cheap vodka better--a charcoal filter like a Brita pitcher, or milk washing?

Milk washing leaves a lot of sugars naturally present in milk primarly lactose It will also reduce the strength It was a common practise in historic recipes for punch. My guess is that the filtration effect that you're talking about is only a part of why the milk washed vodka tastes better

If you add some Kahlúa to that vodka and milk, you'll have a White Russian, which is excellent. It won't matter if there are any impurities in the vodka. Especially after the 2nd or 3rd one.

You’ve probably also slightly sweetened it with the sugars from the milk.

You need to do it more than once with water filters. The problem is that you need to change the filters between each filtering, and that gets expensive. Especially since you need to do it 4-6 times. Mythbusters proved it but said it would just be cheaper and less wasteful to by top shelf. Reason less wasteful, you lose some vodka to the filters each time. Also you have 4-6 filters which need to be thrown away.

My liver winds up getting the job in the end.

You are adding liquids (that are soluble in the alcohol) left over from the milk in the vodka as well though. This changes it's flavor. If you take milk, cause it to separate, then run it in a centrifuge, you are not left with water, you are left with something that has it's own taste.

Yeah I don't think the spinning is getting rid of the milk lactose, so that might contribute to a better taste as well (also the % will change)

Sometimes kidney and liver meats are treated with milk to reduce the bitter taste. This could be due to the lactose sugars in it which sweetens the meat. Similarly, the vodka in this experiment may have dissolved some lactose in the vodka.

Thank you for doing this, you and ppl like Nike Red are the only ones showing the world how cool chemistry can be.

Thank you.

Tbh. It really depends on the person. I’ve watch a few peeps take a shot like it’s water. I’ve also seen others just gag at just the smell of it. Whiskey, 🥃 a man’s drink! I love it

While I don't doubt the power of milk washing you seem to have left out the part that it also waters down the vodka which will also make any alcohol "smoother"

Milk washing doesn't just remove tannins and bad tasting molecules, it also adds some sugar and dilution to the vodka so of course it's going to taste better

Does the dilution by the water in milk also make it more palatable? Or does it get redistilled to concentrate it back to normal?

Aren't you also adding lactose (a sugar) to the vodka to "sweeten" it?

Some Russian vodkas also milk filter. I have an empty bottle of Parliament Vodka from Russia, indicating it was milk filtered, for example.
