Tying a Clove Hitch to secure a Fender to a Rail

The Clove Hitch is a temporary binding knot that is used to position fenders from a rail. However it has two giant faults, it slips (loosens up)

If you have suggestions or tips you would like to share, please post here.

Smooth sailing,
Captain Bob

Beautiful. Thanks, and I liked how you’re actually outside with your boat too.

Good job old timer. I'd love to talk to you about life back then. Yours seems very interesting.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who does this.

Love your videos, Capitain Bob! Thank you for taking the time. We sail a 1967 Bristol Corinthian 19 and just got a Cape Dory 25. Waiting for better winds in August to launch it (we are in the Chilean central coast). So far this winter has been pretty nasty.

Thanks for the video. Why would I not just use two half hitches? I have heard the advantage of the clove hitch, for fenders at least, is the ease of adjusting the height of the fender. With the half hitch added, you seem to lose that advantage.

Hello Captain Bob, this and all your other videos are easy to follow along and I can do the knots. Thank you, so far I feel comfortable with the square knot, sheet bend, clove hitch and figure eight. Can you please recommend what other knots I should try?

Wish I'd watched these videos before I had to do them on a boat for the first time!

Would this be useful to temporarily hold dock lines from a 50' yacht to the dock before the final tying location is set? I am often the one jumping to the dock and grabbing lines/pulling the boat closer in before my FIL or hubby jumps down and puts the ropes in their final secure location and ties them off. I usually just throw the lines under the bull rail (very large bull rails here in Alaska) and hope the boat holds its position while I grab other lines or wait for one of the guys to tie them off. Thanks much😁!

A half hitch to the rail also works to back up a clove hitchg

Can also tie the half hitch around the rail too

Would this be able to support 200 pounds?

So the half hitch makes the clove hitch more secure?

Clove hitch with a safety knot is what it's called in the fire department. Safety knots are used on everything
