Sparta was a brutal fascist police state that held 70-85% of its population-called helots- not just under serfdom, but would declare war on them pro forma (every year) and had a massive police force called the krypteia dedicated to carrying out acts of stochastic violence on the helots to keep them in line.

A lot of the myths about Sparta comes from the Roman period when they became a tourist trap and peddled "the authentic Spartan experience" to Romans who were awestruck by a society supposedly completely focused on war. But in real battles Sparta was never that special compared to other prominent city states

I wonder what Leonidas and Alexander would have thought of eachother if they lived at the same time and sparta was just as strong as it was during the second Persian invasion and what leonidas may have thought of Alexander's campaign against Persia.

They tried to conquer Asia 2 times before Alexander with initial successes but through the fact that they had 200.000 slaves to control, they could not go far away from Sparta without some revolt take place and that is why they always have 2 kings, this was why they did not accept his proposal to follow him I suppose and the fact that everybody in Greece throughout history want to be leaders."Civil war country".

Sparta is one of the most overrated overhyped culture in our contemporary culture. And if I remember correctly, after the famous 300 event, Sparta was in bed with Persia. Of course Alexander wouldnt believe Sparta!

It was commonly known that during the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens, Sparta was heavily financed by the Persians. Further, Alexander the Great was known to be at the forefront of his Army on a horse where he always surveyed the Enemy Army formations and changed his Battle Strategy according to the conditions of the battle field. The Spartan Army would do "the same old, same old strategy" at each of their battles. No Innovation, No Master Battle Strategy that Alexander had always displayed.
