What it Really Takes to Setup the HTC Vive

Excited after the arrival of my long-awaited HTC Vive, I was anxious to set it up. The intro video on how seemed easy enough, so I figured I'd carve out a couple of hours and get it done. I have a desktop computer I built years ago laying around and figured I'd give that a go and just upgrade whatever components needed upgrading to get it to the minimum requirement for running VR and do this video for anyone interested in what exactly it takes to get your HTC Vive up and running. So here goes.

This is exactly what they have on the Vive channel...

I mean this is still pretty simple for plenty of reasons:
1. Steam is a program owned by pretty much every PC gamer, so installing it won't be trouble.
2. It provides you with all the tools needed and useful instructions for setting up the base stations.
3. All you really have to do in terms of controllers is connect them to your pc
4. The headset requires little more than plugging in some cords
5. All you have to do after that is download and run the setup program and calibrate your room space
6. Play

When you compare that to setting up some other things like a steering wheel, it's pretty easy. I mean with a steering wheel you have to:
1. find a reasonable way of holding the steering wheel down without drilling holes in your desk
2. download any software required to use it
3. make sure you have the correct accessories you want to use it with (like a stick shift, pedals, etc)
4. find a way to prevent the accessories from moving around
5. Make sure all the inputs are being recognized by your pc
6. Follow some maybe not so great instructions on changing the controls for your game
7. Change the controls and troubleshoot when it doesn't work
8. Test out the feedback and make sure everything feels smooth, adjusting settings when something's wrong
9. Play

if you don't have tripods, for the time being, you can also just put them on some boxes and chairs because the tracking still works fine even on waist height and without the 45-degree angel :D

i got my HTC vive used, and it doesnt have the micro usb cables for the controllers, can i just use a samsung phone charger as a back up?

What I learned in setting up my Vive was to ///TAKE DOWN ALL REFLECTIVE ARTWORK// from my tiny office... because lasers.

Now my walls are all covered in 3M velcro strips. :( Next house must have a dedicated holodeck.
