At the California Institution for Men, a state prison in Chino, there’s a program that trains inmates to dive deep. Here, at the on-site Marine Technology Training Center, students study commercial diving both underwater and in the classroom. Founded in 1970, the 18-month course has graduated hundreds of men—many of whom have gone on to jobs on oil rigs and ships and only 6 percent of whom have returned to prison.

this is one of the videos where our faith in humanity is restored 👍
kudos to the instructors, and especially the inmates.

In addition to positive reinforcement rehab vs. incarceration provides, developing the skill for scuba diving introduces these folks to a completely different world. I am a scuba diver, having a profound appreciation for the under water world has given me different perspective on the above water world. I see the re-incarceration rate of these divers is 6%; I'd say that is evidence that indicates this program works.

Don't waste humans, give them something to do and a purpose, there's enough punishment in that system.

It's almost like rehabilitation works better than incarceration who would have ever thought that! This is sarcasm because of course it's better than incarceration.

Fantastic! Rehabilitation should always be key in prisons, so this is great to see. The for profit prison system is an absolute travesty and an epidemic in the US.

You guys always bring us fantastic stories with quality production. Thank you!

I was just out of the Navy and begged my family to help me fund a school to become a commercial diver. I am now 46 and earn $180k a year flying around the world diving. Granted I earned more skills with welding and deep diving but what these prison guys are learning is incredible.

I don't mind my tax paying dollars going to this rather than for private prisons. Just sayin. Isn't rehabilitation the purpose of confinement anyway?

a really touching video.
i've just started to learn in the past couple years that people in prison aren't necessarily bad people and that they deserve a chance too and that as a society we rarely give them that chance.
this video inspires me to positively contribute towards giving them that chance.

thank you.

This is what "rehabilitation" really should be; it is more than just punishment.

They should do this for all trades, not just diving.
