In this video we're trying out another tune from The Jam. They are quickly becoming a favourite of ours. We can't wait to hear what's in store with this one. Enjoy!

The young Paul Weller, angry, powerful staccato lyrics and guitar, he just connected with so many young men trying to make sense of their lives, I was one. Not forgetting Bruce and Rick who tied it all together so brilliantly.

One of their finest tracks and great stuff again guys. Wardour St not only had The Vortex club that's mentioned, it was also the home of The Marquee club where I spent many a happy night in my teens seeing bands like The Jam. For an off centre suggestion for the Jam, try Here comes the Weekend off their 2nd lp, This is the Modern World, one of my favourites.

Sadly there was a lot of violence in and around the British punk scene. From punks being attacked in 1976 for looking different (or being “anti establishment”) to fights at gigs and clubs. This song is actually in a metaphor by Weller for the violence and intimidation he witnessed generally, but in particular at a punk club called “The Vortex” in Wardour Street in Soho, London which is referred to in the song. From this he extrapolates a dystopian future coming soon to the country where Britain is engulfed in civil war. If you are going to do a Jam album then “All Mods Con” (from which this single is taken), “Setting Sons” and “Sound Affects” are the best three released in 1978, 1979 and 1980 respectively.

Thanks for listening and sharing. Wardour St. has been at the center of London's club scene, and Soho, in general, is a hub of the music industry. The club, The Vortex is mentioned here. From 1976-1978 I worked in a pub in the Berwick St. Market-just a short walk to Wardour St. I spent plenty of nights at The Vortex, which hosted bands like The Jam, The Clash, X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie, and the Banshees, The Slits, The Adverts, punk poet John Cooper Clark and so many more. I also spent too much time at the Vortex's predecessor, The Roxy, and other nearby clubs like the Marquee and 100 Club. The punk scene was exploding at the time, but unfortunately, there was violence at the fringes. The situation in Britain was grim, and many young people didn't see any prospects for a decent future. I think that may have fed into the violence throughout the UK. What kept me afloat was the music and DIY ethics of punk and my determination to be part of the music biz. I'm not a musician, but I get a lot of satisfaction doing just about everything else to get new, exciting music heard. What started (for me) in Wardour St. stayed with me after I returned to the US in 1980. I'm still at it.

I didn't appreciate the Jam at the time but they grew on me over the years. This song, "That's Entertainment" and "Down In The Subway" are the three I remember most.

This song was released as a AA-side with David Watts, but I think ‘A’ Bomb was banned from being played on Radio One at the time.
(Wardour St is a real street off London’s famous Oxford St, & not far from the trendy (and still Mod frequented Carnaby Street and the name & subject of an early Jam B-side)! Great song choice btw!!!
