Thanks for your clear explanation of Dynamic range, etc. Just wondering? When setting the threshold for the compressor/Limiter, should you be trusting your ears, i.e. hearing enough compression without overcooking it and introducing artifacts, distortion etc. Or, are there numbers we should follow, to achieve a similar result. Apologies for the long-winded question but i find compression, the trickiest thing to understand and get right!

VU meter. The most important thing. It shows rms levels very well. Get back into using them in your DAW and everything changes for the better. Some of the software ones are very good. I also have expensive real ones as well. Ballistics are also very important. They can tell you so much. Ensure your track VU or rms levels are consistent. Keep your bus rms levels consistent too and your final stereo mix rms or VU levels. It's what they used in the old days. Modern DAW's eliminated them at first. They are coming back slowly. I have been going on about VU meters for decades. Peak meters don't tell you much at all. We do need them but only for very fast transient sounds. Most things are not fast though and the VU meter is king.
