Understanding EVERY volume measurement (LUFS, RMS, VU, Peak, db)

I think we can all agree that volume is important when recording and mixing. But let's just be straight up- it can also be confusing. There are so many different terms, none of which are self explanatory. So in this video I want to explain them all so you can understand and use each to make better sounding music.

Your zeal to teach is admirable. This video needs to be watched a number of times by those who are new because there is so much data presented within a short time frame. Thanks.

Thanks for the tutorial on LUFS. I'm getting thatYoulean Loudness Meter tonight, because I'm approaching the mastering stage on a song, and this information and plugin will be helpful in getting a good master. Cheers!

Love your presentations Colin and how you make it simple and teachable by your natural ability of doing so. So worth the time in watching how you make it unfold and for one to understand the formula to its all. Thank you

Another wonderful explanation of the various units I need to set before recording. It does explain why certain elements of my recordings seem to "push through" the mix when I want them to be more balanced in the mix.

Thanks again for another great video. I recently uploaded my first song to Spotify thanks to all your help. I used the luffs meter you mentioned and got it set to -14. My song still sounds quite compared to other songs on Spotify. Guess maybe I should have pushed that a little more as you mentioned in this video. Anxious to get my next song done and up.

Volume is a measurement of 3 dimensional space. In sound volume is a critical consideration. Decibels describe level of one sort or another. So, when talking about signal level, it is better to use the word level so as not to confuse it with volume. You can avoid a lot of workplace confusion that way.

Great video, Colin. I always pick up at least one thing when I watch your stuff. Thank you for helping me continue to improve in my understanding of sound reinforcement and mixing! Loved the addition of LUFS / Fletcher Munson curve discussion at the end.

Great video. I’m a singer and I’m starting to learn music production to record, mix and master my own songs. This video definitely clarified what each of these terms mean and how they are used. I don’t use garage band but I’m sure this info. can be applied to any other DAW. Thanks again.

Still learning and this was helpful in how to work my volumes in the mixing stage. Thanks for all your videos. They have been very helpful.

Great video, just a small clarification. At 6:36 you mention that RMS is "an average volume over a short period of time", that's a somewhat different calculation. RMS is as you may know, the root mean square value of a signal over any given range of time. Perhaps you didn't want to go into the deep mathematical details with the general audience and avoid complicated explanations, but in general RMS and average are different values. I will continue where I left with the rest of the video.

Thanks for the explanation of LUFS, I got the Youlean Loudness Meter some time back but I haven't used it mostly because of my ignorance of this way of measuring volume. The other ways I'm a lot more familiar with.
