Is having Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK the same thing as having British Citizenship?

Having Indefinite Leave to Remain (no matter which category/route you obtained it from), means you have permanent residence in the UK and are no longer subject to immigration control. However, it is not the same as actually being a British Citizen. Firstly, you will not be entitled to apply for a British passport and secondly, if you were to leave the UK and be away for *2 years or more, you run the risk of losing your Indefinite Leave to Remain.
*Note, that those with ILR/Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme, can be outside the UK for up to 5yrs before losing their ILR status.

To actually become a British citizen, you would first to apply for Naturalisation as a British Citizen. Only after you have obtained your British Citizenship, will you then be able to apply for a British Passport and would also not have the concern of losing your immigration status no matter how long you left the UK for.

Serous question though, say you are on 5 year spouse route and you have been 5 years in the UK continuesly but your Extention BPR is about 6 months away (which means you will have to apply ILR 28 before your BRP extension expires) I heard you dont have to wait for that, you can apply for the ILR as soon as you finish the 5 year Uk residence it dont matter if your BPR is couple months away to expire?

My wife’s Spouse / Partner Leave To Remain BRP card expires on 22nd April 2024 and she has been in the UK since 19th January 2019. Her Visa on the passport states as (Standard) Which is the 5 Year route.

Initially my wife received her 1st BRP when entered in UK on 19th January 2019 and the BRP was dated from 20 December 2018 with status for "Leave To Enter".

How early can my wife apply for the ILR application prior to the expiry date of her current Leave To Remain status?

My wife has been out of UK from 11th September 2022 and returned back to UK on the 6th April 2023. The reason for the long stay during this period was due to Medical Treatment and we have all the medical letters signed by the Doctors for evidence which can be submitted during the ILR Application. Will she still be eligible to apply for the ILR ?

I am British Citizen Passport holder and our son was born in UK as well.

Hey guys, I’m 27 moved to the uk at the age of 5 and I have idefinite leave to remain, I wish to join the army but I understand you either need to be a part of the commonwealth or a British citizen, is it correct that I’ll have too do a citizenship test which is roughly £1000 and a life the uk test worth about £150 and then once I pass that I’ll be able too apply for a British passport ? Long winded question which I’ve been trying too chase for awhile
