Pretty crazy, Upper Deck had all the means to print legitimate cards for this product, but they just went for bootlegs instead.

Thanks for bringing more attention to this. Upper Deck during that era made Konami seem like the villain out the entire time. Funny enough, 4kids also tried to embezzle Konami and other rights holders for Yugioh too, so really, there's been a lot of attempts to steal from Yugioh.

Shame really, the older card print quality and feel is so much better, they feel much cheaper and more flimsy these days, even modern starlights, ghosts and collector rares I can't appreciate as much as the upperdeck stuff.

Counterfeit, which nowadays translates to "we think we deserve money for artwork on cardboard, so only our cardboard with art on it is real."

Making cards which cost roughly fifteen cents to mass produce, and then attaching an arbitrary value based supposed value is the reason I start making my own magic and yugioh proxys.

I really can't understand how they could be counterfeit cards in the first place. Lower quality, yes, but produced by the company licensed to produce the TCG cards, and all the cards were TCG cards. It's such a weird thing to me.

Great opening ruxin - love that kind of stuff. Konami isnt a great company, and they probably deserve alot of the criticism they receive, but jeez, you almost feel bad for them with what upper deck was doing at the time.

It's not counterfeit. Upper Deck had the right to print YuGiOh cards thus those are official cards.
Konami did not like them printing cards and selling individual cards without their consent, as you can see those were "Pack Ultimate rares" not promo cards that are specific for that set.
So Konami filed a lawsuit to remove Upper-deck's ability to create cards because that was the only way to remove upper decks authorization.
So calling them counterfeit when at the time, they had the right to print cards is just false.

My local card shop had a fake Aqua Neos in the case. He got it in the purchase of a bulk purchase from someone selling their collection. If you don't know about the counterfeit cards to begin with it is an easy thing to miss.

I love how space-conscious this product is. Wide enough to catch the eye, while being flat enough to store a few dozen on a shelf while having little to no waste. Much better than the replacement for Special Editions. Makes me wish this company handled all Yugioh product.

From the UK! I bought one of these from Walmart on a holiday to Virginia in 2008 when I was 12! Didn’t realise this was tied to the upper deck drama! I still have a few of the fakes, including the Dreadmaster!
