In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the 12-Step Suite from Dream Theater. We listened to This Dying Soul in May, and we're continuing on with The Root of All Evil from their 8th album, Octavarium. This is a hard driving track with some great riffs and solos from their live Score performance in 2006. I hope you enjoy!

Once you get more familiar with the songs in this 12 Step Suite, you'll be able to spot all the quotes and recurring motifs from the previous songs incorporated into the newer ones. The final "movement" of this suite is almost entirely composed of previous material.

that entire Score concert was amazing.

14:00 you are absolutely correct. That final melody is the "Medicate me, infiltrate me" melody from the second section of Octavarium. Also that final note is a C#, which leads straight into the next song in the Twelve Step Suite, Repentance, which is mostly in C# minor.

I love it when someone gets as giddy about that foreshadowing melody at the end of the song. I too heard the song "Octavarium" before the "The Root of all Evil" and I geeked out when I heard this part too especially once I learned the concept of this album. They sure are clever bastards!

As always, this is the best reactions I've been listening to for this song. And yes, this song and Octavarium basically move full circle, the continuation and all. I think it's time for you to listen to In The Presence of Enemies Full Parts from them. 25 minutes Heavy Progressive Song for Metal Monday

They still play The Root Of All Evil very often live and I'm not ashamed to say that I nearly cried singing this song when I went to see them for the second time. It's a very special piece for me and many others who found understanding and comfort in this music during our darkest hours, when perhaps family wasn't there for us. Much love from Argentina, love what you do.

Looking forward to your reaction to the next piece in the suite... I think you'll LOVE it.

Also, is called "THE ROOT of all evil" beacuse it is also the root of the key the album is in (F)... only DT can create music with so many levels of creativity.

That Ending Melody is laced through the Entire Octavarium Album. On the Track "The Answer Lies Within" the String Section plays it going into the Bridge (If I recall correctly)

The whole Octavarium album is a masterpiece, maybe consider doing Sacrificed Sons?

Both octavarium and the 12 step suite require multiple listens, because the foreshadowing and callbacks in each of the songs requires knowledge of songs later in them to fully appreciate both the current and upcoming songs.

The next 2 songs in the 12 step suite are I would say much more callback filled than the first 3, so make sure you really keep those songs in mind when listening to them.

10/10 album. Great transition album for DT to from their previous sounds/ methods into a more modern take on prog metal.

Doug, one of your best reactions. Great insight both musically and lyrically. It doesn’t get much better than Dream Theater imo.

This was the first album that I truly started listening to dream theater on my own. And this album really blew me away as how a band would just tie a whole album together like that. Still one of my favorite.

I can't believe you caught the Octavarium reference on a first listen, crazy!

Doug, it would be awesome if you were able to get an interview with Mike Portnoy and talk about how he wrote the 12 step suite.

YES! Re-uploaded! This is the first track of the best live show of all time made to DVD. I absolutely love the entire show. Mike makes me laugh and cry all throughout the show. He’s such a showman. Love it. Thanks for giving us this!😊

Yes, that melody foreshadows "Medicate Me" from "Octovarium"

Glad you're getting into the 'Score' concert in NYC. It was amazing. Best concert I've ever seen. I knew you would like it.
