Record, Mix, and Release a Song (Part 6): Recording Cajon

Recording a Cajon may seem straight forward, but there are a few considerations worth knowing about. For the home studio, the Cajon can be a great instrument for adding rhythm, but also keeping it real! For this song, I had a specific sound in mind, so we see how I approached the recording a little differently!

Enjoying your series and other videos too. I wondered what your thoughts were on using a cajon microphone as you never mentioned them?

Are those a pair of Rode NT5-S mics? I'm asking because I'm researching what mics to buy for my Cajon

Hey Mike, true story. I'm in San Diego as you know, with an international border to Mexico. We went to Mexico to buy some items that were much cheaper there. I give my bank card to the guy behind the counter and he busts out laughing! Shows his co-worker and he laughs. I say ah...what's so funny? He says you are from El Cajon CA eh? I say yes. They laugh even more...OK OK what? I ask, he says you live in a BOX! Apparently El Cajon means THE BOX in Spanish. Years later I worked Pro Audio at Guitar Center in La Mesa CA. Sold a ton of them in the Pro audio Dept. I was researching Cajons for a project and figured your site would have something...yep! Rock on or we'll hurt cha bad! jv

I have to admit I had never heard of a Cajon until now. I suppose somebody in Canada must be using them but I don't remember ever seeing or hearing one before. Maybe I just head my head stuck in the sand.

Hi Mike! I want to record a cajon for the first time for a folk rock demo of mine, but my interface is limited by a single mic input. I'm not sure how I should mic it in this case. The cajon has a pickup, so I'm thinking of blending the pickup with the mic, but I'm not sure if I should use a dynamic or condenser, and if the best mic position for an overall sound would be on the hole, inside the cajon or in the front facing it. I have an SM58 and an AT2035, but I have no way of using both at the same time. What would be your choice?

Man the drums are hard to lay down. Especially when I'm not a drummer.

So a cajon is just an old speaker box you bang on
