Kevin I also like southern NH best. Bought a home in Peterborough a year ago this month. For retirement. Most Floridians think I’m nuts but we moved down from CT to FL in 94 and I lost my wife on Thanksgiving 2020. New England is still where my heart and all of my family and friends are. Being alone after almost 35 years of marriage is hard without a support system of family and close friends. I will be up in June and I can’t wait. I absolutely love NH and all that it offers.

Yeah, they tend to have a Mass/ Southern NH bias in this list. They completely ignored the Capital Region and Lakes Region. This list is for people looking for Mass-lite towns. If you want to get the NH feel I would recommend Wolfeboro, Meredith or Gilford in the Lakes Region and Bow, Hopkinton, and Pembroke in the Capital Region. Good, locally controlled, smaller school systems in those towns. The Lakes Region benefits from low taxes due to the large number of 2nd homes around the big lake. Bow and Pembroke sit near the Route 89/93 intersection so commuting is pretty easy.

If you're looking for a lower priced town, try some of the smaller surrounding towns to these places. For an extra 15 minute commute, you can drop the housing prices by an extra 100k. Chichester and Alton are good examples of this. Watch out for towns that are small, old mill towns like Pittsfield, Milton, Franklin, and Claremont. While they are trying to recover, they are shells of their old selves and have old crumbling schools and buildings and tax bases that can't support massive improvements and repairs. High Taxes and Poor Schools make for a tough combination for young families. Of course you have some money and can do private school, they can make for a nice investment as real estate prices are low.

Home prices are ridiculous. I was born and raised in NH. I love the area but it is way to expensive for what you get.

The best thing about being in New Hampshire is, it’s not Maine Massachusetts or Vermont. So being near any of those states is not important to me. Remember, New Hampshire has great skiing.

in Hudson now. My issue is the home prices in the southern area are absolutely outrages. Been trying to save for awhile now and it just keeps getting tougher.

It would have been informative to include property tax rate for all the towns you mentioned.

I live in Keene New Hampshire. I love the state of New Hampshire. It's beautiful and clean and I'm very happy to live here. I loved Keene before I moved here. I would come and do all my shopping and just stroll around, taking the environment. Since they've built a second huge homeless shelter it has become very dangerous to go out at night, you hear police sirens all throughout the day, people begging on the streets for money. I can't even go down the hiking trails or the park by myself because it's become too dangerous. More and more you hear of people being dragged into the woods and unspeakable things being done to them. They don't care if you're a man or a woman that will rob you beat you and do terrible things to you😢

Gonna add Henniker as a great place to visit in the summer. The Contookook river and the covered bridge are new england perfection.
Stay away during the school year though. 😂

A fine list, but... there are so many great places/towns to live in NH. The real key is knowing what you want. The list misses a lot of areas because a lot of the towns (ex Bedford/Amherst and Hanover/Lebanon) are essentially right next to each other. I live in southwestern NH and wake every morning to a mountain and a lake, but can get to Boston or the sea coast in 90 minutes. I wouldn't trade where I live for any of the towns on the list - even though they are great towns.

How does anyone afford a home? Im a single professional close to retirement. I make a good living but can't afford any of these properties. I love living here but doubt I can stay long term.

You’re mostly given information for families, but some of us are individuals. I also need to be in a place I can commute to Boston Logan airport easily by train, so I don’t have to stress and take the car everywhere. I took the train, called down Easter, the Amtrak from Boston to mean one time and that was very convenient, although a bit slow but I don’t mind that And yes, I know the train doesn’t go directly to the airport.
. Would you tell about some nice towns that fit a commute by train toward Boston and also some Seaside towns that are easy to reach please.
