How To Run The Duo Concept (Gap Scheme)

The Duo concept is one of the most widely used concepts in the NFL and college game. It's an all-purpose run play that pairs well with inside zone due to the leverage differences with the same look.

You've most likely seen this on the goal line, any time you see a WR motion in and a run up the middle, this is Duo. That WR motion is simply to add numbers to the box and pick up anyone who isn't handled from the blocking scheme.

The version in this diagram is from a 20 Personnel (not the traditional TE in a 3 point stance). The rules remain the same though.

You can block this in multiple ways, with using either a number system or a gap responsibility only. Either way, the gist of it is...get DOUble teams at the point of attack and kick out the EMLOS (end man on the line of scrimmage). RB reads the playside inside linebacker, which requires patience from the RBs but also makes this read very simple.

Super great stuff ! Growing a new channel is always a tough especially with the saturation of football media but with breakdowns like this I’ve got no doubt you’ll find an audience.

Love this breakdown, Coach. Thank you. What program are you using to draw this up though?

Love your channel and videos 👍🏽😎

I thought the back read the back side linebacker so for example in your first play he would be reading the M??

Well done video. The WR technique is typically a push crack or the WR pushes toward the CB for 5 yd to get him to backpedal then crack the safety who is typically a better tackler. Would love to see some all 22 tape to be able to see all the techniques on the field

As a fan of a team, the Los Angeles Rams, that is increasingly using Duo I appreciate you explaining it. I am a medium knowledgeable fan but not big on the x's and o's. I appreciate your video but suggest maybe you try to be aware of using a lot of lingo that a standard fan like me might not understand.

Why is Duo always run out of these heavy formations? It seems like if you spread them out wide and use a sniffer, you should be able to run it into a lighter box. This would also let you read an end and RPO a jail screen to the back side. Am I missing something?
