In this video we look at how well Unreal Engine runs on M1 powered MacOS. We compare Unreal Engine 5.0 running through Rosetta to the newly released native 5.2 running on Apple silicon.

We also look into the recently announced Mac platform round map from Epic Games, showing what you can and cannot expect from UE 5.2 on Mac, including Lumen and Nanite support details.

Just a quick tip, the disable hDPI support thing does actually affect the UI text etc.

If you leave that on but disable the viewport hDPI setting instead then you get the best of both worlds with a sharp ui and good rendering performance.

Oh dude, I had that same project, the Japan streets one from the Unreal Marketplace. It tanked on my PC with a 2080Ti, like 8-15fps looking down that street. Turns out the guy who made that scene didn't do any optimizing on the textures/materials, he just left them all at 4k. So that is definitely a good test of a gpu and it is pretty amazing how this runs on M1's. Gonna finally install Unreal on my MB Pro, plus Nanite & Lumen support are improved in 5.3, apparently.

Your video was quite helpful when deciding whether to use unreal on an M1 Mac. Since it’s been a relatively good experience with only a few limitations.

Could you do a video about the Mac updates in unreal 5.4 and an update to the other updates since your last Mac unreal from 9 months ago. That would be awesome, thanks!

Regarding technical performance of the chips for Nanite: m2 chips have atómics hardware. M1 chips don’t. That’s the limitation and why it is experimental in m2 but not available on m1. Basically m2s have the hardware. By m3 hopefully atomics should be fully working and supported natively by default. I don’t think m1 will get it unless supported through software conversion

0:45 - wait a sec..., technical spec for the Mac is 2021 Macbook Pro 24 GPU M1 Ultra ? I think it is a mistake, 24-core GPU is the base model M1 Max.

M1 Max. The M1 Ultra is exclusive to the Mac Studio (and the M2 Ultra will likely also be exclusive to >3” thick devices with beefy thermal capability, not <1/2” thick laptops.

Does anyone happen to know why ProRes isn’t an option for export on a Mac even though the plugins are installed even on 5.2? UE gives no reasoning for this at all.

Unfortunately multiple gamepads are still not supported on macOS in the editor or on any Apple devices in packaged builds.

If anyone knows a solution to this bug, please let me know. Any insight would be appreciated.

Having it run is a thing, but on most M1/2 the HDd space is very precious. I doubt any project with huuuge nanite Models would cut it for sizeable projects
