AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT GPU Review & Benchmarks vs. RX 6800 XT, RTX 4070, & More

In this review, we benchmark the new AMD RX 7800 XT GPU and test it against the RX 6800 XT, NVIDIA RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Ti, RX 7900 XT, RX 6700 XT, and more. The GPU market still has last-gen options available, complicating the decision-making process for the RX 7800 XT. In some ways, compared against NVIDIA in particular (like the 4070 or horridly positioned 4060 Ti 16GB), the 7800 XT looks strong. In others, mostly against AMD's own products (like the 6800 XT), the 7800 XT still reflects the modern trend of up-naming cards to force a repositioning of market expectations for what a $500 card should do.

For summary graphs, I would suggest to NOT flip the order to always keep the charts positive, just keep relative to GPU you are currently reviewing, so if it's slower than something, it's in negative percentages ... in my honest opinion, I think it would be more easy to digest.

The summary charts comparing the GPUs at the end were really cool! Crazy seeing the 7800xt to the 6800xt chart where it outdid it in a wide variety of games. Would love to see more of these high level summary charts! Thanks for the benchmarks and hopefully the team can rest now.

Not surprised at all considering how much manufacturers cutdown their chips on this generation.
I've been seeing this happening with food packaging for a couple of years now, with prices remaining the same while the packs being much smaller.

i love the new summary charts, but i think it would be beneficial to add something like "7800 XT advantage" on the positive side of the X axis and "6800 XT advantage" on the negative side of the X axis so it's easier to interpret the % improvement

I like the new summary charts. I do think they'd be easier to read if they consistently went from "compare" card to "review" card though, even if that means the chart goes negative sometimes. I found myself having to stare at the title for a several seconds each time to mentally set the "direction" the chart was indicating.

The comparison charts at the end were awesome. Glad to see them being an addition. You guys have been awesome with the additional metrics, from frequency spectrum analysis to the introduction of the frame-time analysis charts. Super glad to see all these different breakdowns, as well as your clear and succinct explanations that show how to read and apply each metric.

I really appreciate that you're including 1660, 1070, and 1080 cards. Don't know the relative market share of those models, but I feel most people who are seriously considering upgrading have a card similar to those (like me with a 1070).

Got my 7800xt, tried it out in a couple games. It's quite impressive. I'm also using the AFMF/FSR 3 preview drivers. Threw a little undervolt on it and a custom fan tune. It's pretty dang quick on 230-ish watts.

I was "afraid" to buy a 6950xt thinking that 7800xt would be the same performance but now I am really glad I bought the 6950xt. What a beast of a card

Great review, love the comparison charts but I feel like they will present better if the card being reviewed is always on the same side (let's say put it on the right regardless of which way the bars go). That would reduce any possible confusion from making sure we know which way we should be reading them.

The summary charts are pretty cool!

I do want to say that in the specific instance of the RX 7800 XT vs 4070 raster and RT it may have been better to show both cases on the same chart, or to use the same range (-25 to 25) for both charts.

I understand that they're different categories so it makes sense to show them separetly, but having the ranges be different makes them feel different visually by going from smaller and thinner bars to bigger and wider bars. Of course all the numbers are still there so I don't think it's an issue, but it may be something you want to consider.

I’m not in the 10 series category but I think it’s good that you have included them in the comparisons as a lot of people still game on those but will be seeing the need to upgrade soon.

Really like the negative to positive percentage charts in for each game, which only works if you have two things to compare but it's a lot more intiutuve and gives a quick visual understanding.
Like the normal graphs too! ❤️
