What happens when you put public health care into the hands of for-profit companies?

And what does that say about the need for single payer in the U.S.? We went to Iowa to investigate what happened when that state's Republican governor decided to privatize Medicaid.

The Des Moines Register has done great coverage of this issue. Check out more personal health care stories here:

It takes a special brand of cognitive dissonance to deem yourself a "Christian" and fervently push for privatization of Medicaid/Medicare.

I'm a first year medical student and I want to spit in the face of that doctor. It's disgusting that a doctor would say such things knowing the oath that he took.

the thing is that medicaid could EASILY be solved if this country's military budget was actually cut. There's no reason to have a military budget so high.

How can a person be a life long republican, have a son in that condition, and not feel remorse. Who did he think he was being “conservative” against. Probably people who weren’t his son i suppose.

Who dislikes an INFORMATIVE video like this??
Furthermore, this is really scary! The one woman in particular, lost her husband due to the cut off of his care. What the hell kinda world are we living in now? This is insanity. Most likely all of us will be in need at some point in our lives and this is NOT what human beings deserve. We deserve better.

Excellent investigative journalism, these are the stories that should be reported on and everyone should know about but you NEVER see in mainstream media

It doesn’t surprise me one bit that the man at the end of the video says he’s a lifelong Republican. I bet it’s the case for most, if not all, of the people interviewed for this piece. Conservatives never understand things unless & until they experience them personally. All of a sudden he realizes that a strong and generous Medicaid system is necessary? I’m sorry, but it’s not like Republicans haven’t been trying to dismantle these programs for decades. And they’ve been quite successful because some people just don’t care about programs that help others in their time of need.

You never privatize something that deals with someones, freedom, life or security (social and national).

This is sad. Looking forward to the day when money becomes meaningless and life becomes the priority.

How come the USA won't instill a free health care system? Like Canada and other European countries is it that hard to instill I don't get it or people just don't wanna pay the extra taxes.

Ask your senator if they support Medicare for All. Repub or Dem, doesn't matter, just ask and see what their actual response is. If you get anything besides a "yes", don't be surprised for more of the same b.s. happening.

As a UK resident, I hope that Americans will never stop fighting for universal healthcare. In the UK, if you are sick or injured, you go see a doctor, and you get treatment, for free. Our taxes pay for this. Like the lady in the video says, we're all an accident or injury away from needing help. Today I am paying for my fellow citizen's care, tomorrow it could be me on the other end. Be it for compassion, or for self-preservation, we need to have universal healthcare.
