I've always loved this version of Sherlock because he's not an emotionally devoid robot. He struggles with his emotions for sure, but he still finds entertainment and comedy in things. Other portrayals make him a brick wall of logic and nothing else.

I love this joke. The audience is just as ready to accept Sherlock's nonsense explanation as Mary is because we already accept his ridiculous hyper-deduction as just part of the show, easily within our suspension of disbelief - and the writers know that, too.

Ngl, House M.D. did the Watson (Wilson) love interest death so perfectly for the modern age when sticking to the og story's canon. Absolutely could have been done here too, which honestly would have stopped that awful fanfiction moment when we lost this Mary because TWO geniuses, a WAR VET, AND THE POPO JUST STOOD THERE like brainless mannequins during that scene. So much OOC. The last Season was all so OOC.
(I really believe Moriarty being redbeard's killer due to his obsession and loneliness would have worked better because then Moran could have been a character and been pulling strings to mess with Sherlock as a final straw, having to wait till Sherlock was confident all of Moriarty's network was down. Then he could set the stage for 'the final problem', Jame's true first and last crime. I feel like there's fun potential in that)

And I'd argue Mary going out akin to the way it happened in House would have shaken Sherlock up because here you have this serious, well trained badass, and she was taken out in a wreck? The universe isn't fair. And you could still have the Sherlock and John conflict if she was going to pick up Sherlock from a den or an alley or somewhere he shouldn't be.

... (Cut Throat B literally had my heart that entire end of her story. It was so freaking good and Sherlock had that same but different potential that would have been complimentary to the characters instead of insulting
