If he wants to use that exercise and have it be effective it would seem he should quadruple the load and make it a real god damn eccentric challenge.

I’ve used exercises like this as a warm-up or if I’m coming back from having not lifted in a good while. Also used them when I don’t have access to a barbell. Split clean/jerk/snatches are unmatched.

I keep thinking people just have difficulty teaching somewhat complex exercises, so they default to stuff like this that seems similar. Any exercise that you have to practice a few times a week for a few months to get the hang of people are very apprehensive about doing or teaching. You see it with the olympic lifts, but they are not the only exercise that people do it with. Almost all of the exercises where you question how or why they are being programmed that way by the coach are all very easy to teach and learn to do.

Basketball players got the funky builds that just add another level of complexity to learning O lifts.

no challenge to thoracic spine stability like a jerk, the guy in the clip is leaning forward and rounding a lot, maybe he's not supposed to and needs to clean up the technique but if you do that in a jerk you just fail the lift -> it's self-correcting.

I think there's merit to the deeper catch position placing greater stress at greater angles. It's a bit of a stretch (or a lot even 😅) but you wouldn't say quarter squats are better because you can load them heavier either.

I’m sure we had this on HC months ago.

An enjoyable variation, certainly as an accessory.

I’ve used the alternating version you used in your clips with clients as part of a warmup circuit (gen pop clients not athletes - trying to get people generally fitter + healthier, not increase performance or anything) as well as a novel spit squat/lunge variant. Doesn’t compare whatsoever to a split jerk or any split oly lift variation you’d prob need to load these up a fair bit more if that’s even practical. Good general conditioning tool, kindve fun to do, and a great way to torch your legs if you’re into that sortve thing

Hey Will! What do you think about implementing this concept (drop-catch) to upper body exercises like pull-ups, rows or presses?

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on ISAs. Joel smith talks about it relatively frequently

Sir what areyour thoughts on paused/dead stop reps and concentric only exercises? What are the benefits for athletes?

Do you think it’s important or worthwhile to learn to split jerk with either foot in front so you can train this quality on both legs?

Is it possible to get good at oly lifts if I try to learn them by myself? I feel that if I don't get the technique down I won't be able to put that much weight on them.

He has a podcast, y’all should “debate” this. Would like to see both points of view

I think that's on point. It is a different thing if increase the stimulus by something like "drop split squat" from a box. If you google : Jerome Simian "Building the world's greatest athlete" .. you will get a nice article (by a coach I respect a lot) where he mentions these kind of exercises in a specific context. But as a genreal rule => Split Jerk will do the trick in most cases.
