The level of mechanical energy you are playing with here is terrifying. You were quite brave to operate the mega trap from such a close distance lol

I was wondering why my mum kept visiting you. Makes sense now

I don't even trust my own software to run properly. The amount of faith he has in the safety of his own engineering is crazy to me

You dont ever wanna hear the words "10000 pounds of force" and "it goes off by itself" in the same context.

Can't wait for the giant bear trap experience at next years opensauce

When I did my hunter/trapper safety course we had an instructor that stuck his hand in a trap on purpose, it closed on his fingers, and he said with a perfectly calm look on his face "This hurts like hell, but it won't break your bones" and went on to tell a story about how he was setting one and got both his thumbs stuck in one and had to work his way free by himself (trap was staked to the ground)

I didn't know bear trap content was what I was missing out on. That thing is terrifying lol

i love how TheBackyardScientist puts really happy music in the backround and makes a video about something that can kill someone

I thought years ago kevin was the most lighthearted crazy scientist on YouTube but he has quickly become the most menacing

It's funny how the big trap is illegal to use not because of what it would do to a bear, but what it could do to you and then he makes it even bigger.

Kevin hadn’t uploaded in so long I was starting to get worried that he’d died microwaving a microwave or something crazy like that. Turns out he was doing something arguably more dangerous, but at least he’s still okay!

That exact "beartrap" you showed at 3:00 is a reproduction model where the springs have been annealed to a level of 2.5%... Had they not been annealed, they would have maintained their 100% compression. Not to mention the fact that teeth on the jaws are fundamentally frowned upon by any true trappers & outdoorsman.. thank God they outlawed the teeth on the trap jaws Nationwide scores of years ago.
That being said, badass engineering skills and you gained a subscriber 👍

This is by far the most terrifying thing you have made yet. I'm surprised you made it through the whole video without anyone losing body part.

The fact that he keeps going even after noticing nuts and bolts flying off the teeth is insane. There’s only 2 bolts holding each tooth in place, and their trajectory is directly horizontal with the people standing around the bear trap.

5 months, and it was worth the wait for a giant bear trap

Immagine breaking into this dudes house. Getting reeled in by an automated spear gun, getting your head trapped by a bear trap, and then getting melted by a flordia man with a crackhead lazer gun

I remember walking through the woods and almost stepping on a bear trap, that was a scary day. But with this one, I would just be cut in half and not have to be scared, very cool.

"This trap is actually illegal to use"
*continues to use it, then make one that 8000 times more powerful*

"a bolt just flew right by my head!"
"Yeah but look at this bone though"

I've been scared for his safety in other videos before, but holy crap lol this one was insane. Even though the video was already published it still made me so tense. I was just waiting for the unsprung trap to start slowly closing with him inside it, or for one of those teeth to fly off completely, or for him to absolutely mangle his leg while stepping in or out of it, or for some shrapnel of whatever he was shredding to cut someone up, or for the entire machine to explode, sending metal and teeth and parts and coil springs flying everywhere, etc. etc... lol.

That being said, I'm still so glad that people are out there making weird and wacky stuff like this and sharing it for the world to see. Now, thanks to TheBackyardScientist, next time I encounter a problem in my life in which building my own incredibly over-sized and over-powered bear trap is the only solution, I'll already know exactly what NOT to do in every situation!
