Greek Byzantine Music

The music of Greece is as diverse and celebrated as its history. Greek music separates into two parts: Greek traditional music and Byzantine music, with more eastern sounds. These compositions have existed for millennia: they originated in the Byzantine period and Greek antiquity; there is a continuous development which appears in the language, the rhythm, the structure and the melody. Music is a significant aspect of Hellenic culture, both within Greece and in the diaspora. Greek musical history extends far back into ancient Greece, since music was a major part of ancient Greek theater. Later influences from the Roman Empire, Eastern Europe and the Byzantine Empire changed the form and style of Greek music. Greek folk traditions are said to derive from the music played by ancient Greeks. There are said to be two musical movements in Greek folk music: Acritic songs and Klephtic songs. Akritic music comes from the 9th century akrites, or border guards of the Byzantine Empire. Following the end of the Byzantine period, klephtic music arose before the Greek Revolution, developed among the kleftes, warriors who fought against the Ottoman Empire. Klephtic music is monophonic and uses no harmonic accompaniment.

I don't understand why people don't think the eastern romans could be both greek and roman. It's pretty simple in my opinion. They were citizens of the roman empire before the west fell and all that had changed was there was no western emporer for the east to communicate and coordinate with. Saying you need to own rome to be the romans is like saying you need to hold central asia to be a turk

This is the real ancient Greek music with all these pythagorean musical scales that today are called micro-tuning, makam and have been classified as middle eastern music. Do not forget that from Asia Minor to China there was a strong Greek element from the time of Dionysus to Alexander the Great with the great Hellenistic kingdoms in Bactria, Persia and elsewhere, it is no coincidence that there is the province of Yunan in China which means Ionas. This is the reason why there are so many elements in common with all the musics of Asia, the Greeks did not limit themselves to the current geographical area, that is why there is such an exchange of cultural elements with other peoples.

I love how this music sounds similar to Turkish Sufi music.

This is a proof that ottoman music was built on their "predecessors"'s music, the byzantines.

It so interesting to hear such a disjointed collection of notation without the need for any resolution. To the modern ear the sound is dirge-like with mostly minor mode overtones. One can almost teleport their minds back in time to the environments this music was performed in, very cool but hard to listen to for long.
