Ex mechanic here (finished my 4 year apprenticeship but left the line of work soon after). Never EVER open the hood while there's a fire, absolutely insane amount of risk. The second you give the oxygen a second way to get in/out it can "pillar" (where it bursts into an even bigger flame with enough heat and force to kill almost instantly)

I mean he actually saved himself by driving, because the fire was completely blocking his door and by driving the wind was able to blow the fire out of the way
