I break in sketchbooks with swatching all the art supplies that I want to use in it so that i can get to know the paper in a low pressure way. I can then see how the mediums interact with the page.

I always write my name and phone number on the first page of a new sketchbook. In case I lose it, there's hope it will find it's way back to me.
