Different color timings of The Matrix

Movies with a history of color timing changes often generate a lot of discussion. Interestingly, a Bill Pope (cinematographer of The Matrix) interview from just before The Matrix was released seems to support the green look as the film’s intended aesthetic: “We didn't necessarily want the Matrix world to resemble our present world. We didn't want any cheery blue skies. In Australia, the sky is a brilliant blue virtually all the time, but we wanted bald, white skies. All of our TransLight backings [for the stage work] were altered to have white skies, and on actual exterior shots in which we see a lot of sky, we digitally enhanced the skies to make them white. Additionally, since we wanted the Matrix reality to be unappealing, we asked ourselves, 'What is the most unappealing color?' I think we all agreed on green, so for those scenes, we sometimes used green filters, and I'd add a little bit of green in the color timing.”

The 2008 green filter is a childhood memory
For the reply section: I was born in 1998, and I watched all versions. Thematically the 2008 is the only correct version as the green filter brought out the artificial enviroment of the matrix just like how the computer code was green. All other versions feels like the movie was more akin to a tv show while the 2008 made it into a movie.
2nd edit. Feel like i shouldnt have to explain this but for those who are mentally inept: My mother obtained the film as movie theaters were shit canning them at the time. We had the physical copy of the films and a projector that could run them. I saw the origional movie release version when i was 11.

Fun fact that you probably already knew: Every time our heroes are in the matrix simulation the background is green to symbolize the green streams of data that represent the matrix itself!

The 1999 VHS image is the correct colour tint. Green. That is intended tint of green, it is from my film book, a few images taken from the film. Bordwell and Thompson 'Film Art' in the section on Cinematography and image colour.

The green filter made the movie feel like I was watching it through a thick piece of glass

35 wins it for me. The banal cold but sunny everyday weather fits perfectlx with the theme. "Don't even think, everything is nominal."

The 1999 16mm looks the best and the most like how I remember the matrix
It retains the right shade of green without losing the skin tones

This release was unforgettable for me. It was 8th grade and me and a friend randomly wanted to see a different movie then just snuck into Matrix on a spur of the moment not having any clue what it was about except for the cool posters. Without a doubt a life changing experience even to the point we started doing backflips off my roof for some reason right after lol.

Honestly the original release captures that dystopianness best. The last two are just... green
