I was there and went into the Karez. They are incredible. Nice and cool (I was there in HOT August). Those grapes are so unbelievably sweet. No comparison to any others.

This is probably the most amazing thing I've seen on YouTube. Imagine if we spent money on doing something like this instead of spending trillions of dollars on war.

Karez is a Persian word for underground canal. This form of water distribution was first devised on the Iranian plateau and then spread to other parts of Asia and Africa.

No matter who invented the Kaner well, ancient Chinese dig many 20-70 m vertical well on the slope of the mountain just by two hands. That is an amazing achievement.

this system is old and known by the Persians and Moroccan, in morocco, it is used now in the mountain of atlas to irrigate the fields and garden of Marrakech, and I believe that it was used in Andalusia at the time of the Arabs in Spain

We have a Karez irrigation system in Pakistan too. Its an underground system of canals which actually dates back to the era of Indus river civilization.

In the Philippines we have our own natural rock water reservoir under the mountains. We just put bamboo on the side of the mountain where water leaks. Continues supply without experiencing droughts.

There are plenty of traditional canals like that in the desertic south of Morocco, they bring water from the Atlas Mountains to the desert they are called "khataras" nevertheless, this is a huge achievement.

How can it be a "modern- day engineering marvel" and an "ancient irrigation system" at the same time ?
