How to Write Better Electronic Music Melodies!

Today we're talking about how to write better electronic music melodies! Lately, I've been getting a lot more requests to cover how I recommend learning more about songwriting and melody writing. The first thing I suggest is to get a larger (at least 49 key) keyboard, that can also play simple drum beats. Then, make sure you have a basic understanding of major and minor scales and chords. Then simply start by walking down those scales while playing their root chords. From there, begin to experiment with different notes in your walkdown, and don't be afraid to make mistakes! After that, it's all practice! Enjoy the video :)

I have been playing music and studying theory for 30 years and I still do these types of exercises. I fully endorse doing these basic exercises with various sound patches so you can hear how they can sound so different with different instruments/sounds.

Totally agree do what makes you happy and learn the gear you have before buying more is another good beginner tip.

If after watching those major minor videos you‘re still utterly confused, look up a course called Building Blocks! I‘ve been going through it over the last month and it sure covers all the fundamentals really well! Writing melodies starts at the beginning of Building Blocks 2.

Really drives home the importance of drums & rhythm in making melodies melodically musical.

Amazing idea. I’ve been trying to brush up on my music theory a little and have found this is a much better approach than what I’ve been doing.
I guess one of the best things you can do sometimes is go ‘back to basics’.

Great exercise, practicing with a beat is a lot more fun too! Memorizing the circle of fourths/fifths has been a big step forward and isomorphic controllers like the launchpads in note mode can be a nice change up.

Have to say, I really enjoyed this! Have you considered doing a video miniseries on building a track from scratch, from beginning to end? That might also help give inspiration to those that are just starting out and don't really have a process in stone yet. Just a thought.

Maybe add one video for finger placement, with going up and down the scale, to avoid bad habits.
