Tales From Earthsea - Official Trailer

In the land of Earthsea, crops are failing and livestock dying. Two dragons appear from the storm clouds and devour each other - an omen of impending disaster. The balance of the world is in peril of tearing apart.

In his search for the cause of this encroaching catastrophe, the Archmage Ged, the greatest of wizards, meets Arren, exiled Prince of Enlad, in flight from a nameless Shadow. They journey through ruined landscapes to Hort Town - a city where blank citizens deal only in fake goods, slaves are traded and addicts wander the dangerous streets - and cross paths with Therru, an orphan girl with a fire-scarred face. Ged learns that the wizard Cob, in his search for eternal life, is preparing to open the door between the realms of the living and the dead. An old and defeated adversary, Cob has sworn to take terrible revenge on Ged.

This movie was adapted from a book of the same name. Studio Ghibli decided to pick up the story and animate it, they hired Goro Miyazaki the son the famous Hayao Miyazaki who created some of the most masterful works Studio Ghibli has ever released. The story in Tales from Earthsea was majorly influenced by Goro and his own emotional connection to his father's work and the fact that his father was a bit absent from his childhood. Hayao Miyazaki was displeased with the final product and only said "My son is still a child" after the movie was over.

This is definitely on my lower end if I were to rank all the Ghibli movies(but not last). HOWEVER this movie gets way too much bad criticism and is underrated. I personally enjoyed this movie and I hope others do too.

I saw many negative reviews here and I watched it last night to see if it's really not good. But wait, Goro is amazing! You should watch this too! I love the details of each scenery, town, food, etc. and of course the story.

I really enjoyed it!
Maybe it's not the"best one" of Studio Ghibli but still worth to watch!

This was Miyazaki's sons first animation. Miyazaki urged his son not to make it saying he was too young and inexperienced to animate. He did not like the movie when in premiered but you could see after watching it he was flustered emotionally. Sometimes I wonder.

This movie was really good, I really enjoyed watching it! The story is very deep, it’s about the life and death. From how you cherish your own life as a human, to overcome your fears, obstacles, weaknesses and doubts that inside of yourself. The sceneries of this film are incredibly beautiful and captivating as it’s finest. Definitely this wasn’t bad as I expected, it such a nice and wonderful movie from Ghibli.

I just watched this recently to see what all the commotion was about on why it was not that good. Now I can see why. The plot is really disconnected with many unexplained story elements. I just think so much potential was wasted.
That being said, I still enjoyed the movie. The scenery/still frames are awesome to look at, and the soundtrack is one of my favorites, but yeah...this isn't one of ghibli's finest.

Whatever you all guys say, I love most of the soundtracks (like the one used in this video). It gave me more chills than other soundtracks from other ghibli movies. Others are good but the soundtracks in this movie kinda gives me amazement and sadness at the same time, just perfect because it is aligned with Ged's emotions. I barely or haven't seen Ged smile in this movie.

For me, this movie's story is still ghibli level but the plot is not that good. It's about a boy who became scared of himself because of what he can do (or just did like when he killed the king which for me is quite shocking. The movie didn't explained why Ged did that) and how we was able to accept his humanity and willing to redeem himself in the end (that we can all commit mistakes, that we are sinners) by going back to his place and allow himself to be judged and punished I guess.
