What is Brainwashing?

In this lecture we investigate the phenomenon of brainwashing. We describe the 20th century British psychiatrist William Sargant's ideas regarding how the victim of brainwashing is similar to the religious convert and the therapy patient who undergo 'sudden conversions'. We finish the lecture by looking at how fear can be used as tool for 'mass brainwashing'.

I witnessed a natural sudden change in behavior of a duck. My father used to raise ducks, most never hatched eggs but some would find a spot in the flower bed or under a building and then build a nest and lay eggs.
One female in particular was extremely loud and would wander off by herself constantly squawking very loudly.
One day I spotted a hawk on top of her attempting to kill her. I ran outside and the hawk flew away. The duck just laid there and looked dead. I picked up the duck and started to lay her back on the nest in the flower bed when she came alive and suddenly flew put of my hands and about 30 ft away to the edge of the creek.
Normally ducks will get in the water and float around or sit on the bank. She stood for an hour on the creek bank just staring off into the distance.
After that she barely ever made a sound. When she did it was very low and quiet. As I watched her standing there I realized she was contemplating what had just happened so I think there must be some level of self awareness.
