However, around the 13 minute, 43 second mark in his video, viewers may notice how abruptly it seems to cut. This is due to the fact he shares a view of the atonement that is identical in conclusion to that of penal substitutionary atonement. While Jones has said in comment exchanges with me that he wasn’t meaning to espouse PSA and is unsure of where he lands on theories of the atonement, there are three reasons in posting this.
1) Michael edited the video to remove this clip from above. He may very well have done this for a good reason, perhaps he changed his mind from when he was defending his, quote, “metaphysical” approach to the atonement. Entirely fair but that begs the question of why delete it if it was such an insignificant point. But the larger issue is:
2) Michael was rather quick to accuse us of ill motives instead of honestly engaging us. He specifically told me he never said that the love of the Trinity was torn apart for us in his video (to the contrary above). Which makes his editing out of this clip all the more telling. I don’t take well to underhanded tactics nor attempts to dismiss serious discussion out of hand by anyone, whether I agree with them or not.
3) I’m not calling Michael out as a heretic, blasphemer, censor, or any other smear against his character. This is not to say I’m okay with PSA: I think it is incredibly blasphemous and should not be taught by any serious Christian teacher as anything other than heresy. That aside, he has been an influential teacher to me and his content is very edifying. And I’m no better, when I was Calvinist, I defended PSA regularly and fervently. But this is to just start a larger discussion around PSA, what it constitutes (as we may believe in a system even if we don’t identify with the term that signifies the system), and why Michael edited that part out. He can be wrong, corrected, or criticized for errors, as I am equally accountable to as well.
Lastly, I was fed up with people saying I was bearing false witness or trying to ruin his reputation (with all of about 5 subscribers). Hence, this.
