Have to admit this one hits differently now that he's gone. Smh. Thanks for another exceptional reaction, Jess! This is one of my favourite Audra performances and it's great to have some more insight into just Why it is so incredible. 💛
If you're looking for more musical theatre to react to, here are some favourites that are a bit more...obscure. Lol

Still Hurting - Lea Solanga rehearsal

Everybody's Girl - Debra Monk

Man of La Mancha - Linda Eder

Don't Wanna Be Here - Kate Wetherhead

Ireland - Orfeh

This last one is a musical theatre song but with a more R&B flavour to it...because Amanda Cole could sing the phone book and I'd show up for it.
She Used to Be Mine - Amanda Cole

This particular performance was at Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday concert and he was in the audience. EVERY SINGLE WOMAN on that stage is brilliant and they take turns, one after another, blowing the roof off the theatre as they SLAY some of his most amazing pieces. Thank you for your analysis of Audra's contribution. And as most comments are saying, this DEFINITELY is even more special in light of Sondheim's recent passing. What an ICON and giant of musical theatre. It feels like the end of and era.
I recommend analysis of Marin Mazzie's concert version of Back To Before. Another breathtaking talent no longer with us, sadly. OR Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, and Judy Kuhn performing an Andrew Lloyd Webber Love Trio from My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies.
Thanks again for your spot-on analysis!!

I love the breaths! I feel like it conveys the wonder of this daughter feels towards her mother’s life.

Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Donna Murphy, and Marin Mazzie also have amazing performances from this same concert and I’d love to see your takes on them!

Audra's tequinique is just on another level of good. She's just so talented, I got goosebumps listening to her, which I normally only get with very emotional songs. I think that's what makes her so special to me.

How fitting that you upload a video of one of Sondheim's best numbers, highlighting his artistry with the lyrics.

I've been waiting for years to see someone react/review Audra. This performance is one of my favorite. Like other it feels different now that Sondheim is no longer walking with us on earth. I would love to see more of his work on your channel. Like some other song from A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd.

My first exposure to Audra was the song 'Your Daddy's Son' from Ragtime, and i've been an unwavering fan ever since. She has deserved every Tony she has received

I have always loved this performance. I am a firm believer that Audra is the most accomplished vocalist of our lifetime.

If you're not intimately familiar with her work, I urge you to listen to Some of the clips from Lady Day. And then follow up with Summertime.

Audra trained at Juilliard, and can sing basically everything.

If you want a brief overview of her, her first few albums are must own.
1 - way back to paradise. She was just beginning her career and took the leap of recording an album comprised of essentially unknown composer's at the time who have now become some of the best loved of the modern generation (Michael John Lachiusa, Jason Robert Brown, Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel)

2 - How Glory Goes is a perfect combo of numbers made well known by Judy, Barbra, Reri Grist and some more contemporary music.

4 - Build a Bridge is a completely different feel and style for Audra. Songs by Elvis Costello, John Mayer, Laura Nyro, Randy Newman and Kermit the Frog.

My favorite performance of hers is on YouTube but not great quality. Sondheim's 75th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl, she sang what can you lose/not a day goes by. A true masterclass.

All 6 performances of the “women in red” are an absolute masterclass! Seeing these was such a pivotal moment in my life as an accompanist, watching how accompanying brilliant singer should work (even in orchestral form.)

Aaahhh. I know this session. Love her. She sang together with Donna Murphy. Can you please react to Donna Murphy too?

She deserves all 6 of those Tony Awards.

As you were talking about the more audible breath (because of the short breathing time and the head voice needing air) I felt like it could also be heard not as singing technique but just creating a sphere of the ordinary mothers having to do so much to do all day that sometimes they're just out of breath :-) Or at least that's what I imagined when she was singing that. Love the performance, I've heard a bit of Audra before and she's amazing. Love your analysis as well, I've learned a lot of interesting things. Thank you.

The impression I've gotten from seeing interviews with some of the other ladies on stage with Ms. McDonald that night, and other reviews, is that this is well on the road to becoming a legendary performance, the one folks point to when they want to prove to someone just how extraordinary a singer, and a singer/actor, Audra McDonald is.

Really enjoyed this review and analysis.
