Great video. I have created a slope ceiling using the extrusion tool as you have but also by creating a line or reference point at the peak, drawing a ridge line then stretching that line to the reference point. You are using SketchUp to determine wall and roof areas and space volumes for manual input into HOT2000. The lack of 3D input integration between SketchUp and HOT2000 is a significant limitation of HOT2000 which uses bin weather data. EnergyPlus is a true hour by hour commercial building energy simulation program funded by the US DOE that has a SketchUp plug-in such that the building envelope definition is populated when you create the building model in SketchUp. The SketchUp model defines the building in either Openstudio, the graphical user interface (GUI) for EnergyPlus or directly into the EnergyPlus IDF, which is a text based input file for EnergyPlus. The easiest way to define weather, schedules and the HVAC system is through the OpenStudio GUI which converts all of the inputs including the SketchUp model into the EnergyPlus IDF input file. The EnergyPlus simulation engine is then run to create the reports based on the hour by hour weather data. The HVAC systems and the energy saving measures that can modeled in EnergyPlus is extensive. Using it for a residential model though, is like using a sledge hammer to drive a finishing nail.

Awesome job CBC radio voice guy! At the other end of the spectrum.. when you got a bit of time ( cause EAs this spring have had nothing but time on their hands! ).. one headache for me in the learning process is how all the different square footages and perimeters of the different levels must “jive” to make h2k happy.. if you could wrap your head around a short video on this layer of the onion, it would be appreciated.

Hi Merry - love your videos!!! - I encourage all of our EA's to use your SketchUp formatting methods :) We want to meet you one day! I'm wondering if you have any advice on dimensioning the sketchup for NRCan QA purposes? I would love to find a way to streamline this and edit out any redundancy.

Hey there,
Curious, have you dabbled with Revit? It's pricey, but a really nice modelling software. I personally default to H2000 and sketchup 99% of the time, mainly just to have something for visualization & to include on a document. I'm a physical space person, but in the words of Mr. Henderson: "some models are good, some are better"

Hey! new Hot2000 user here and future energy advisor. if we were to model your example, would we have to model two separate ceilings, in order put both roof assemblies with their parameters to show the program they're side by side?
