Welcome to another one of my random geography and culture facts videos. So I made this video instead of writing my paper on why the Soviet Union collapsed and now its late. So if you’re like me and going to procrastinate what you’re supposed to be doing right now then I guess you might as well learning something.

From the Wikipedia article on East Timor: "Timor" is derived from timur, meaning 'east' in Malay, thus resulting in a tautological place name meaning 'East East'.

I believe that there's a theory that suggests Spongebob and all the characters are based on mutation from all the nuclear testing, hence the weird life, as they live in Bikini Bottom, which means they'd live in the sea somewhere around Bikini Atol. There are multiple clues in the series that would suggest this.

Fun fact
Since Brazilian Portuguese wasn't influenced by French like European Portuguese, the language remains pretty similar to Galician Portuguese, to the point schools often make children study the letters written during Brazil's discovery in 1500, and they're rather easy to understand

Thanks for doing what the K-12 schools should be doing!!! I used to teach introductory geography to college 101 students. Some didn’t know blue represents water and green represents vegetation on a map. They learned!!!

I lived in Galicia for a year and it was interesting learning a bit about their language! There definitely were places that spoke more Galician or spoke more Spanish. Since then I have started learning Portuguese. Galician was heavily influenced by Spanish since becoming a part of Spain centuries ago, and as a result it seems like Portuguese vocabulary with Spanish sounds. Nearly all of the Portuguese vowels and consonants that make it distinct from the sound of Spanish are gone, with the exception of a couple open vowels and the letter x, which is pronounced like the English "sh". There are debates as to whether it's a separate language from Portuguese, and there are some teachers in schools that are trying to introduce Portuguese orthography into lessons (replacing x with j, among others) and having kids write letters to kids in Portugal.

You're doing a great job with these videos about nothing and about everything at the same time. Keep it up.

Another way to say hopefully for us Latinos is the phrase; “Si Dios quiere” (If god willing) pretty much the same meaning as the original Arabic word inshallah

I feel like my language exploring has taught me more than anything. No more Mr. nice guy! No more parochial thinking! And no more fantastic or terrific ideas.

Thing to note about Switzerland, the German they speak is a dialect called Swiss-German (very creative I know). It sounds pretty crazy, I’ve never been able to understand it but I’ve been learning German for a while. Most Germans cant understand it either, but Swiss people learn proper German in school so they can speak both

There is a cave in my hometown in Alabama that is graffiti-ed with Cherokee script in an attempt to preserve the language.

Another cool one, Milky Way comes from the latin Via Lactea, which means the same thing, and it's actually its name in many other Latin-derived languages.
