I had my last period at age 53. At age 56 I noticed slight spotting, just enough to stain the crotch of my panties but not enough to wear a pad. After 3 months I went to my primary care physician and was given a PAP test. Negative. A PAP tests fir cervical cancer. Upon my persistence I underwent a D&C, nothing was found but my symptoms continued. I did not have insurance but I paid out of pocket for a second opinion by a high cost ob/gyn that I went to when I had insurance. Based on her observations and experience if I had insurance she would have performed a hysterectomy. I returned to the ob/gyn at the free clinic. She was slightly annoyed that sought a second opinion but at my urging performed an in-office biopsy. The sample taken from the biopsy revealed cancer. A month later I underwent a hysterectomy. I had stage 1B endometrial cancer. Who knows what caused it? I am African American, overweight, relaxed my hair for many years, eat meat and have had over 20 sexual partners over 30 years. My advice: you know best when you suspect something is wrong. You must be your own best advocate.

I didn't have a relaxer and got cancer. Other factors are also important. Environment, DNA, lifestyle, diet, and even other hair products have harmful chemicals that can "cause cancer." In the past, people went nuts over certain hair products and canceled them. We definitely need more studies and more needs to get done so no one will have to suffer from cancer ever again! 😢

I’m glad to find this. I relaxed my hair for almost 30 years. Various brands applied by different stylists and all with different techniques. I dealt with ongoing scalp issues and hair thinning. I liked the convenience of chemically straight hair, but knowing what I now do about the research, I’ve decided to stay natural. My scalp has healed and my hair is thick. The humidity can be a beast during summer, but that’s a small inconvenience for being free from cancer causing products on my scalp.

Very informative and evidenced based! I too am an healthcare provider and realize that there are many factors that contribute to cancers, environment, diet, activity levels, hereditary etc. but education is a weapon to use to fight against and prevent them. You presented this in a non-judgmental way and presented us with options. I am natural and have been for a long time, but from time to time have considered relaxing my hair again. As you stated, there are many ways to look beautiful without the questionable chemicals. Bottom line, we need to take care of ourselves whether we relax our hair or not. Thank you my health care provider sister!

I really appreciate your insight on this. I lost my beautiful mother April 26, 2023 from metastatic endometrial cancer. She was only 47. As a young kid, I can’t tell you how often I remember the smell of hair relaxers because it was quite often. My mom was a 90s-2000s hair stylist so she was using relaxers more than 4 times a year. My grandmother also used the JustforMe relaxer on her as a pre-teen/teen. Because my mom was always on the thin side, it is hard not to correlate the heavy relaxer use with her uterine cancer. Additionally, she had risk factors tied to early menarche, smoking, fluctuating estrogen levels due to multiple pregnancies very close together, developing fibroids, irregular bleeding/spotting (and abdominal cramps and extended bloating) and her likely not taking a contraceptive pill to taper her estrogen levels down with progesterone on a regular basis. While it’s somewhat of a stretch to say that relaxers killed her, her heavy use of these chemicals, never knowing the full safety risks associated significantly contributed to her likely outcome of developing stage IV endometrial cancer. I truly wish that I could’ve gotten my hands on this information a decade ago because knowledge is the currency of health. My mom prided herself in being a strong black woman but I want black women to know that it’s okay to ask for help and to not approach your personal health (physical and mental) as an act of selfishness. This information can save lives. ✨

I am sooo thankful to the Most High that I listened and stopped using hair relaxers since 2010! I don't allow my daughters to use hair relaxers nor do my female family members. Thank you for your insight and due diligence.

I am really glad you shared this information with us. I had relaxed hair from 2003-2010, since going back to my natural I couldn't have been more happy. I used to experience a lot of scalp burn and thinning of my hair.. I am so happy I had done my research too

I would like someone to research the difference between “no-lye and lye-relaxers.” I think it makes a big difference. “Sodium hydroxide, ” which is salt buffered. No-lye relaxers are calcium buffered. No-lye relaxers came out in the late 80s and early '90s. I noticed a rise in uterine Fibroids. Relaxers went into a whole different industry. They were sold in drug stores and grocery stores. Non-professionals used them to use at home. It’s a shame that this was not regulated.

I appreciate you sharing this info Habiba. As a Licensed Cosmetologist, I learned about thos many years ago and eventually stopped providing chemical-based services except for hair color rinses and occasionally permanent hair color. I just focus on natural hair care including protective styles. My always expressed their appreciation for my services because I always educated them and that I focused on maintaining healthy hair vs hair styling.

Very informative! I loved that you actually read the study and the interviews, as well as, names a few risk factors. As taboo as it is relaxers work for myself and lifestyle. It’s good to know the risks

Thought provoking details indeed. I stopped relaxing my hair over 6 yrs ago. I prefer my hair straight...mainly a lifestyle choice so I often opt for a silk press. Thanks for sharing Habiba👍🏽

Thank u for info. I went natural for over nine years. Hated the inconsistency of the products as well as the high prices!!So I put a relaxer in a year ago. Have had issues since then. I am going back natural. Learned about cancer risk recently and I do think it is linked to cancer in some black women. I also have a greater understanding of caring for my hair without having to use pricey products. Thanks again for sharing with us.
